Vinnie welcomed the feeling of the warm sun rays on his face as his eyes took in the surroundings. He was in Sarah's living room, laying on her couch. It had been close to six in the morning when they had both passed out on the couch. She had fallen asleep almost immediately the previous night and Vinnie a few minutes after. Vinnie felt a weight on his chest as he looked down to see Sarah snuggled up, sleeping on his chest. Her hands were holding onto his hands like she was holding a teddy bear. Her green apple-smelling baby hair tickled his nose. He smiled at the sight as he wondered once again how they would be as a couple. Since when had they become this close?
Placing a kiss on the top of her head, he squirmed under Sarah until he carefully turned Sarah and got up. After ten minutes of figuring out where everything was kept, Vinnie had brushed his teeth and was rummaging through the cabinets and pantries to make them breakfast. He found the ingredients to make them waffles. Once he mixed everything together and waited for the waffle maker to heat up, he cleaned up the little splitter-patter of the batter on the kitchen counter and washed the dishes. He knew Sarah liked his coffee so he decided to make coffee for both of them. He hummed to a song as he waited for the waffles to be done.
When Sarah came into the kitchen, the look on her face was priceless. Her eyes were still puffy from all the crying but there was a smile plastered on her face. There were creases on her left cheeks and her hair was messy. Guess this was her bed head. Vinnie grinned at Sarah. "Hey honey, you could be my drug. You could be my new prescription," Vinnie hummed as he beamed at her.
"Too much could be an overdose, all this trash talk makes me itchin'," Sarah smirked as she combed her hair with her fingers. "You made me breakfast?"
"What do you take with waffles? Syrup or-"
"Peanut Butter," Sarah walked over to the pantry as she pulled the peanut butter jar and hopped onto the dining chair. Vinnie placed two plates on the table with waffles and two mugs of coffee. Sarah licked the peanut butter of the butter knife as she got some on her nose like how a small child would. Vinnie pointed at her nose and Sarah smiled sheepishly, her cheeks growing red.
"You're literally wifey material," Sarah winked as she wiped her nose.
"This is all part of my plan, you know. I am demonstrating all the premium features, maybe then you'll consider an upgrade?" Vinnie chuckled at his own joke as Sarah joined in too.
"I'll think about it."
After breakfast they were on the couch, taking comfort in the lingering peace of the afternoon.
The air conditioner was on and Vinnie was busy on his phone reading manga while Sarah's head lay on his thighs, reading her book. Well time to find out why Alaska Young died.
Every week, if they were not upset with each other or anything, they were both in the comfort of each other's house. Mostly Vinnie came over to Sarah's house to check on her. The "coming over to check on you" and Sarah's "make me coffee when I am over" became soon became part of their schedules.
"Didn't you read that page that day?" Vinnie asked as he caught Sarah re-reading a page.
"Yeah but I just wanted to re-read it because I think I missed something. Surprised you noticed," Sarah replied as she looked up at Vinnie.
"Maybe I stare too hard?" Vinnie smirked and Sarah rolled her eyes at him.
Vinnie looked at Sarah as she continued reading her book, oblivious to her surroundings. They were glued to each other and Vinnie pondered all that had happened over the past six months. When did they become as cosy as this? He had fallen in love with the weeping girl in the park whom he so dearly calls 'sweetheart'. And Sarah never stopped him from doing so. Maybe she liked being called 'sweetheart' by Vinnie?
"Vinnie..." Sarah moved her book down from her face to look at Vinnie. Vinnie hummed in response as he continued staring at his phone.
"I wanna ask Dylan why he cheated on me..." Sarah mentioned as Vinnie nodded.
"Yes...WAIT WHAT?" Vinnie turned to Sarah with wide eyes. What was this woman thinking? Vinnie stared at Sarah with confusion but Sarah did not seem to back away from what she had just told Vinnie. "Do you have a fever?" Vinnie asked as he brought his hand out and placed it on her forehead, checking if it was hot.
"No?" Sarah snapped as she smacked Vinnie's arm away.
"Then you're probably going crazy," Vinnie stated as he went back to reading his manga.
Sarah rolled her eyes at Vinnie's nonchalance as she sat up and crossed her legs looking at Vinnie. "I am serious."
Vinnie ignored Sarah as she pulled on Vinnie's shirt. "Vinnie? Vin? Vinegar? Vinnie the Pooh? Vincent? Vending Machine?" Sarah went on calling him by different names but Vinnie was not having it. Sarah sighed as she snatched Vinnie's phone away.
"Hey!"
"I am talking to you so stop ignoring me!" Sarah rebutted. Vinnie gave a glum look.
"Why do you wanna call him?" Vinnie finally asked.
"I just want closure. I want to move on, I am done waiting for him to call me back. I'll just take the initiative," Sarah replied as she took Vinnie's hand and squeezed it. "I know I can move on and I will."
"Do you still love him?"
Sarah sighed and shook her head. "Not anymore. Maybe even months after I still loved him. Waited for him to call back and ask me to come back. But I am tired of waiting. I did love him, and I still do. But I don't "love" him. We made great memories, we had great times, things that won't ever be erased from my mind or his. But sometimes when you are at a place where no one there respects you, it is time to say goodbye. Time to agree that some broken pieces can never be mended back. Just like a mirror. It doesn't mean that I don't want him to be happy. I want him to be really happy. And I know he's happier with Tessa. Coz if he was happy with me, he wouldn't have cheated. I am in tears of happiness actually. He fulfilled all his promises for somebody else. I wish him all the best. I just hope he treats Tessa right and does not make the same sick mistake. The heartache will always be there of what we could have been and not what we are."
Her eyes were still as transparent as ever, conveying nothing but complete honesty. "He really hurt you and I still think it's a bad idea but if you say it will give you closure then fine do it. I'll be here when you call him. Beside you," Vinnie sighed as he brought himself to smile at Vinnie and squeezed her hand.
Sarah pounced on Vinnie as she hugged him tightly. For some reason, Vinnie's opinion on this mattered a lot to her. She realised what she had just done and sheepishly pulled back as Vinnie rubbed the back of his neck, blushing.
"Since when did you become so mature?" Vinnie teased.
"Learnt it from you, sweetheart," Sarah winked. Sarah pulled out Dylan's contact as she looked at Vinnie. Vinnie nodded and she pressed on the call button.
Dylan's contact rang and rang and they waited for him to pick up. Who would pick up an ex's call? Sarah called him countless times but Dylan did not pick up. Vinnie continued commenting and Sarah kept on ignoring Vinnie. She really wanted an answer. "This is karma. You don't pick up my calls now, it looks like your ex isn't." "I am telling you this is a bad idea." "Do you ever listen?"
"Shut up Vinnie!" Sarah finally snapped as Vinnie silenced himself with a finger on his lips. He knew how scary Sarah was when she was angry so might as well not have a death wish. Sarah sighed, deciding to press the 'end call' button. Dylan would not pick up her phone.
"Hello?"
