When Snow Melts,
Where Does It Go?

Your breath puffed out in front of you, but you didn't feel the cold- or if you did, you didn't really care much. The nip of frost in the air was nothing compared to the frigid feeling in your chest.

You looked down at the paper you'd been writing- something for your Human Studies class- and sighed softly. The cold made it difficult for your fingers to grip the pencil properly. It made your wrists ache, the pain from wounds long healed digging into the bone below.

This awful feeling that had been lingering around you, worsened by the weather and it's affects on your fragile human body, seemed to only grow. You'd tried shaking it, but... Like the iced-over surface of a frozen pond, it refused to budge.

You blinked as you heard insistent knocking on your door, considering not answering. You felt like you wanted to be alone.

At the same time, the thought of being alone almost physically hurt.

"Hey! C'mon, open up! I'm freezin' out here, y'know!"

It was Mammon.

Since coming to Devildom for the exchange program, you'd been placed under his care. While he wasn't exactly the most responsible of the seven brothers, he was certainly one of the most level headed. He wasn't the type to lose his temper with you, like Lucifer or Satan, and he hadn't tried to kill you yet either.

The bar was horribly low. But at the same time, Mammon had made it clear he was going to pester you until your time in Devildom was over. Even now, when an unnatural cold snap was sweeping through, he was insisting that the two of you watch a movie.

When you opened the door, he rushed through as if it would be any warmer inside. He headed straight for your bed, plopping down and wrapping the blankets around himself as if he were trying to make a cocoon.
"Damn, took ya long enough." He muttered, then looked up at you from his makeshift nest. "Um. Are ya cold? Not that I really care or anything."

He blushed as he spoke, averting his eyes. You shook your head.

Of course you were cold, but it's not like you were going to tell him that. You'd rather not be more of a problem for others than you were already.

At your response, Mammon huffed and stood. He looked pretty ridiculous with a blanket draped over his shoulders like a cape. He opened his arms, engulfing you in them.

Despite his chattering teeth, as he wrapped you in the blanket with him you could feel warmth rolling off of his body. Despite your melancholy feelings, the gesture brought a blush to your face.

"Damn, you're freezin'!" Mammon exclaimed, pulling you close to his chest. He flipped back onto your bed, taking you with him. "Change of plan. I'm makin' sure you warm up, got it?"

"It's not that cold. I'm fine." You huffed. If he held you like this, as if he really cared about you, for much longer, you might shatter.

"You're not fine." He said insistently. He cradled the back of your head with a hand, voice dropping slightly. "Y'know, I've noticed that you've been actin' different. If something is wrong, you can tell me."

Your lips trembled slightly, and after a moment, you swallowed thickly. Tears threatened to spill out of your eyes.
Mammon's grip around you tightened a bit.

"If you just need to cry, that's okay too." He said soothingly. "I'm here for ya."

As much as you may feel embarrassed about it later, you buckled under the weight of your own emotions. Once you opened your mouth, you just couldn't stop.

You told him everything; why you were so quiet. Where the scars had come from. How alone you felt in the middle of it all.

And he listened.

When you were finished, the tears still flowing down your face as you sniffled and tried to catch your breath, he remained quiet. He was holding you as if he were afraid you'd disappear.

One of his hands rubbed soothing circles into your back, the other wrapped securely around you. Once your tears had finally begun to dry up, he spoke.

"You shouldn't have to go through that alone. I..." He swallowed thickly, voice wavering a bit. "I'm here. I'm here, and I'm not gonna let you go, got it? If you ever need to cry, or talk about it, or just hug it out, I'll be here. I'm... Dammit, I'm not too good at this. But I mean it."

He pulled away slightly, looking down into your still-puffy eyes. "I care about ya. I don't ever want you to hurt like this; not if I can help."

The look on his face, so soft and loving, made your lips start to tremble and your eyes tear up all over again. "Y-you don't have to say that. I don't wanna bother y-"

"Hey, you're no bother! If I didn't wanna be here, I wouldn't be." Mammon interrupted, then leaned in and shyly placed a kiss against your forehead. "I... Love you, okay? And don't forget it, cause I'm not gonna say it again."

His face reddened and he closed his eyes, pouting slightly. "U-unless ya ask."

You couldn't help but let out a quiet laugh at that, leaning forward and kissing his cheek. "Thank you. I feel the same."
Mammon opened his eyes, looking almost a bit surprised. "I, um... Course ya do! Anyways, um, about that movie!"

You rolled your eyes as he set up the laptop he'd 'borrowed' from Levi. Life could be bleak and miserable and cold.

But with Mammon by your side, you felt so much warmer.
