Travis' Pov:
I'm still a little perplex after Sal left the bathroom. If someone told me I'd become friends with Sal Fisher like a week ago, I'd be laughing my ass off. And yet, I'm here, trying to get behind what just happened. He just called us friends. As sad as it sounds, I don't think someone ever called me a friend.
My back is still resting against the bathroom stall door and I take a deep breath. There are dried tears all over my face and my mouth feels dry. My throat is sore and my chest aches. I can also feel an upcoming headache. My shirt is still stained with some food from earlier. I look miserable.
I slowly get up and open the stall door. Going back into the cafeteria is not really an option, besides that I'm not really hungry so there's no use in leaving this bathroom anyway. I walk to stand in front of a mirror and look at my face. My eye is still slightly bruised and the bruises on my jaw started turning into a yellow-greenish colour. Still pretty much visible tho.
I sigh and turn on the water to wash my face. After I snapped at Sal, I went in here to get the food out of my clothes but as soon as the door closed, I broke down into tears. I feel weak, at this point it feels like all I do is run and cry. And Sal was kinda with me through it all. The thought makes me chuckle a little and a slight warmth spreads out on my cold cheeks.
I must've stood there and stare at my face for quite a while because suddenly I can hear the bell ring. That was my sign to get out of here and that's just what I did.
The rest of the school day went alright, I got some weird looks here and there but no one says anything. I also don't encounter Sal another time. The walk back home was lonely and quiet and as I come home, my mother is cold as usual. We barely speak a word and I quickly eat to get into my room as soon as possible.
Up there, I don't really know what to do. I still had some Maths homework but I wasn't exactly in the mood of doing it. At this moment a text message lights up the screen on my phone.
It's Sal and the sight of his name on my phone makes my heart flutter.
Sal: you got home alright?
Travis: Yes, I did. Is it alright if I come over already?
Sal: sure thing, man! can't wait to see you :)
I feel my face heat up at the last sentence. I don't think I'll ever get used to him making me feel like that. It's weird. I stare at my phone for a while until the thought of going to him makes me snap out of it. I quickly throw on my jacket and put on my shoes. Before leaving, I take another look in the mirror and realize I'm still wearing the shirt with the food stains. With a groan I grab another one out of my closet and quickly change into it. Then I finally make my way to Sal.
"Trav! Come on in, I've been waiting for you, dude", Sal welcomes me happily after opening the front door and seeing me standing there.
"Hey, Fisher"
I follow him inside of his apartment and take a quick look around. Gizmo, his cat, is laying on the couch and watching TV. Sal ignores it and walks straight into the bathroom, after I took off my shoes and jacket.
"You can already sit down, man. I'll just get the medical shit", Sal announces and walks off while I sit down on the toilet seat.
It smells like him.
The door opens and Sal comes back in, carrying a basket. He kneels down in front of me so our eyes meet for the first time today and I painfully realize, once again, how blue his eyes are.
Then his eyes wander off to my jaw and he reaches out with his hand to touch the bruise there. His fingers brush over it with a carefulness that makes my heart want to burst.
