We got to the practice field and Aizawa had us all gather near the front entrance. "This will all be completely random." He stated. "I will be pulling a scenario out of the hat and each team will then be sent to that area. You will all going at the same time. Team one." He reached in and pulled out a slip of paper. "Go to area D." He drew out the the ones for the other groups and I waited for our group's area to be announced. "Team 5, go to area C."
I swear I saw him glance up at me with a worried look in his eyes before he quickly turned away. I must be imagining things. Why would he be worried about me. It's only an exercise and I'm one of the best in the class.
I turn towards my group and we all start walking to area C, none of us talking. I guess we're all wondering what we'll be up against.
Once we get to the entrance, I decide to take the lead. "Alright, everyone got their coms in?" I ask. They all nod. "You know the plan. I'll go in first and case the area. I report back and then you decide who should follow next. Ponytail will create whatever is needed to help us get through the task as quickly as possible. Sero, be ready to run in and grab any possible hostages or injured civilians to get them to safety. Eyebags be ready to talk down any villain, that is if I can't just blast them to hell. Tails, be ready for either combat or rescue, whichever we need more." They each nod as I recall our plan. "I'm going in."
I walk into the area and am immediately on high alert. I'm in a city setting. There is a lot of damage to the area. There's broken windows in the surrounding buildings, cars turned over and debris is scattered around. I can see smoke coming down the street as well. I can also see a few bodies lying around, but at first they are too far away to really identify them clearly.
"I see quite a bit of destruction." I say quietly so the others can hear me. "No visual on a villain yet. I'm going to go in closer."
"Copy that." I hear the voice of Ponytail in my ear. "Be careful."
I continue down the street, looking around for a villain of some kind. I'm checking in the buildings as I pass by without having any luck. I realize I'm getting closer to the victims and decide I need to check to see how many of them will need saving so I can alert my group. I come across the first body and my heart stops.
"Nooooo!" I hear myself scream and I drop down to the ground next to the broken body of Kirishima. He eyes are wide open with no life behind them at all. There's blood coming out of his mouth and his entire body is completely still. He's not breathing! I grab hold of him and shake him as I scream his name. "Shitty Hair! Kirishima! Ejirio!!" There is no response. I can feel the tears streaming down my face as I sob and hold his body close to my own.
"Bakugo, come in, Bakugo." I hear a frantic voice in my ear but I'm so far gone into the depths of despair that I can't even respond. "I'm coming to you. Don't move." The voice says.
After what felt like years, but was actually a couple of minutes, I hear the voice again. "Bakugo, I have eyes on you from down the street. Can you give me recon of what you see?"
I realize the voice is coming from Eyebags. I look down at Kiri in my arms and gasp for air so I can respond. Before I do, I look around and realize there are more bodies around the area, but what I see makes me very confused. "I'm holding the body" I pause between sobs, " the body of Kirishima. And I can see, I can see other bodies near me. But." I stop as I try to make the scene in front of me make sense.
"But what?" He asks, still only in my ear as he's too far away to see for himself.
"I see the bodies of Mina, Jiro, Denki, Sero, and," I pause as I start to think about what I'm seeing. "And I see your body, Shinsou. What the fuck is going on?"
"Oh thank All Might." I hear him mumble. "Bakugo, we are in the scenario where the villain can manipulate what you see." He says. "You are seeing the bodies of those you care about most. I need you to look around and locate the villain. We need to find this guy and knock him out. The vision won't stop until then."
"Hey dude." I hear Sero's voice. " I promise you I'm not dead. And the rest of the squad is off doing their own assignment. It's not real."
"Try to look away from the bodies." Ponytail says softly. "I know it hurts to see them like that, but they're just dummies. That's why they're not breathing. It's not real. This is just an exercise."
I take a deep breath and try to reason with my brain. I close my eyes and count to three. When I open them, I make sure to look up and away from the bodies. That's when I notice a small form standing at the other end of the street.
"I have eyes on the perp." My voice sounds so rough from screaming moments ago. "Sero, can you swing over where I am to try to reach him. Bring Karate tail with you for backup. Ponytail, you should come too and bring some type of restraints to hold him once we get a hold of him."
"On our way now." Sero answers.
"I'm going to come to you." Eyebags states. "Once I get there, if you want, I can make you stop seeing the bodies."
I continue to hold Kiri's body without answering. I can still feel tears running down my face. I know in my head that it's not real, but my heart's not listening.
"Bakugo." I hear him call out to me, only this time he's next to me and not just in my ear.
I don't hesitate to respond, "Yes." I immediately feel him take control.
"You can now see everything around you as it really is and not as the illusion." His voice seems to come from inside of me.
I blink several times and look around. The bodies are now just dummies. They are each marked as how bad their fake injuries are, waiting to be 'rescued' by us. I drop the one that I am holding and slowly stand up. I walk over to Eyebags and before I can stop myself, I'm hugging him. He has already released me from his control but I need the reassurance. Fucking emotions, making me soft. He hugs me back without a word.
I step back from him and I whisper "Thanks."
"No problem," he replys. "Just wish I could do the same for myself. Seeing Denki lying there is breaking my heart even though I know it's not real."
"I've always admired your ability to stay level headed in tough situations." I say as I look back at him. "You definitely have what it takes to make a great hero, and I'm glad that we're friends."
I actually see a look of surprise on his face as he reaches out to put a hand on my shoulder. "I'm glad we're friends too, now let lets go kick that villain's ass for putting us through this shit."
With a small laugh I agree and we both run down to the end of the street. Karate Tail is fighting him, but seems off. Sero is throwing his tape but is completely missing the target, and Poytail is standing off to the side like she's not sure what to do.
"Shinsou, go snap Ponytail out of his control. I'll deal with the villain." He nods as he runs towards her. "Sero, pull back and wait for my orders, Karate Tail, keep fighting, I'm going to attack from the rear."
I hear them each respond as I get in position. I can hear Shinsou talking to Ponytail. Once I hear her talking again, I cut in. "Now that you can see the truth, be ready to capture him."
I make my move without waiting for her to respond. Being able to see clearly, I have no trouble taking down the villain. I hand him over to Ponytail and tell him to make the illusion stop for the others.
I see the remaining three blink several times and know that they can see clearly now as well.
"Thanks man." Sero says as he looks my way. "Woah, your hair's not purple anymore."
I guess what I said to Shinsou in the field counted as a confession. That makes four colors down and three to go. I try to focus on finishing up the rescue of the victims. It doesn't take us long to gather the victims and head back to where we came in at. We're finally done, I pause to think to myself, I know that this exercise is over, so why does my heart still hurt.
