It's been 20 minutes of back and forth fighting. Neither of you have been able to get the upper hand long enough to capitalize. After two superman punches and a spear, Roman is begining to get very frustrated.

You're down on the mat after kicking out of the spear. Your body is aching and you feel like giving in, but you've come to far for that. Slowly, you make your way back to your feet to continue the fight.

At the last second you see him charging at you and dropping his shoulder for a second  spear. With a fraction of a second to spare, you jump out of the way. Roman's momentum causes him to crash through the turnbuckles behind you, right into the ring post.

It doesn't even knock him down, but you didn't need it to. You go right on the attack, getting him in position for your finisher. You hit it perfectly, leaving him flattened on the mat. You cover him quickly:

1...

2...!

Somehow, he kicked out! That's fine, all you need to do now is WHAM! Within a matter of seconds, Roman had gotten up and landed another superman punch. It didn't quite take you down, as if it mattered. Another spear nearly cut you in half and laid you out in the middle of the ring.

Roman slowly made the cover:

1...

2...

3.

Roman dropped your leg and left you lying right there in the center of the ring. A clean finish, plain as day. It hurts too much for this to be a bad dream, so why did the referee tell you to stay down for the three count?

You start to get back up and see that Roman is gone and fans are already starting to leave. But... you did everything right! Why would Vince change his mind during the match?

Now back on your feet, you look out to the dispersing crowd. They all cheer for you, and mixed chants go around, but it doesn't matter. All the hard work you put in, and for what?

Nothing... you came back and feuded with Seth and Roman for nothing.

You make your way to the back, trying simply to make sense of what just happened. Even when you get back there, you're still running the scenarios through your mind. What could cause this to happen?

"Stephanie wants to speak to you, Y/N," somebody says. You don't really pay attention to who said it, because it doesn't matter. Does anything?

What bothers you isn't that you didn't win, nor is it that the finish was clean. What bothers you is that Vince McMahon didn't have the decency to tell you beforehand that he changed the script.

You make your way to the office, where his daughter is patiently waiting for you. Surely there's some good explanation?

"So, you're probably curious as to-" she begins, but you're already prepared for it.

"Why did he change the script during my match?" you reply in a calm but unsteady tone. You have a feeling you know the exact reason why you lost.

"Well, er... Khan thought it would be better for Joe to lose the belt to Brock," she states uneasily. Oh, for fuck's sake!

"Are you serious? I lost my shot because of Brock?!"

"The decision came from the top, Y/N. I'm not happy about it either, you know. This had been in the works since the moment you returned." You can tell by her voice that she actually believes what she's saying. Stephanie likes you, so you trust she wouldn't fuck you over like this.

"But I had the whole thing with Thea planned out! It's really all just going to be scrapped?"

"Yes, but I'm afraid that's not the worst news."

"What, am I fired now too?" you say, adding a healthy dose of sarcasm.

"Close. There's talks of the next round of releases, and you're #1 on that list."

Shocked, you ask, "What! Why?"

"Nick Khan doesn't like you. It's probably the reason your match got changed," she sighs, and for the first time you see the amount of stress on her face. Because of Nick Khan, she's probably had several of these conversations.

"Well, thanks for letting me know," you say tiredly, turning towards the door. One last look into Stephanie's eyes makes you think that she wishes she could do more for you and the others, but maybe it's just fatigue.

"Sure thing. Goodnight, and get home safely, Y/N."

"You too."

You meet Lexi, Colby, Becky, and Pamela back by catering. They all look like how you'd expect, and they try to cheer you up. Instead, you wave it off and greet Pamela.

"Hey, I haven't seen you in a hot minute," you say warmly, giving her a sweaty hug. She doesn't seem to mind it, but really wants to talk about your match. "No need, it's under control."

"Y/N, that was bullshit. You were supposed to win!" Pam says angrily, and you share this emotion. Unfortunately, your head is spinning so fast that you can't even care.

"They changed the script during the match, and who am I to go against them?"

"Why did they even do it?" Colby asks. You laugh a little bit.

"Nick Khan wants to reignite Reigns and Lesnar."

"Feck, ye've gotta be joking..." Becky sighs. Colby facepalms, and Lexi remains silent. Becky then continues, "Go get changed, then. We'll meet ya back here in twenty minutes."

"Guys, I just want to go to bed," you say, dodging the idea of hanging out with them. It's not that you don't want their company, but rather that you have something to discuss with Lexi in private.

They seem to understand though, and Pam goes with them as they make their way to the parking lot. You and Lexi head towards the men's locker room.

Joe is sitting in there when you arrive, and you sit down next to him. He's still in his ring gear, so you're led to believe he either just got here or hasn't moved since the match ended 10 minutes ago.

"I didn't want to win," he says. "I wanted to pass the belt off to you and be out of the title picture for awhile."

"Well, you'll be glad to know you're going to lose it to Brock," you reply, sifting through your bag to find your complete set if clothes.

"Of course, because we definitely needed that again. I like Brock, but you're the better choice."

"Thanks, man." Now fully dressed, you pat him on the shoulder and take Lexi's hand.

The two of you make your way to the parking lot as well, where the valet is waiting with your rental. Lexi decides to drive tonight, so you hop into the passenger seat and let her do her thing.

"There's something you aren't telling us," she guesses as you drive home. Indeed, you've skirted around the fact that you're at the top of Khan's but list, but you can't deal with that tonight.

"Yeah, but can we talk about it another time?"

"Sure. For now, you need a blowjob and a good night's sleep."
