When I opened my eyes, I still felt like every part of me was in pain. It was still dark out, and I found myself staring up at the stars. “Carina!” Caius gasped in relief.

“How are you feeling?” Septa’s voice came from behind me.

“Where’s Alume?” I muttered, my voice hoarse.

“We have him here. He’s still unconscious.” Caius said, and I looked down to see him motionless in Caius’s arms. I tried to connect with him, but it didn’t work when we weren’t conscious.

“Carina, what has happened? We sense great discord within the earth,” Septa’s voice sounded worried. I sat up slowly, with Caius’s help. I was shaking and let out a slow breath. “Septa, what I saw…I don’t know if it was just a vision, or real. But, as much as the idea frightens me, I’m leaning toward real.” I clutched my head in pain from the pounding and I felt Septa’s head nudge my side reassuringly.

“It’s all right, little one.” He soothed.

“I saw…” I felt tears began to stream down my eyes. “He burst from the mountain. He told me I was too late. That-…that our worlds would burn in dragon flame.”

I felt Septa pull back in shock and let out a growl. “Hiruk has returned, then?” I nodded, unable to say it out loud. “It is as we feared then. We have been feeling something dark and our scouts over in Hireim,” I gave him a confused look. “The land beyond the mountain range, where the volcano lies. The scouts there have reported a growing dark aura spreading from the mountain. I suppose it was only a matter of time.”

“I have to go see my father as soon as possible.”

“I’m sure with what’s happened, the council will reconsider their decision and allow you to go to the Eri.” Septa said, but I shook my head.

“I’m not worried about them. I need to see him now. I can’t explain it, but this is more important than the Eri at the moment.” I tried to stand, but Septa had to help me. I heard Alume let out a painful meow as he woke. “Alume!” I called, almost falling on Caius trying to get to him.

“Carina, did you see it?” he groaned.

“Yes, Hiruk.” I answered, petting him softly. “I was scared you were too hurt to wake up.”

“No, I’m okay.” He assured me, letting out a soft purr.

“Are you all right, Carina?” Caius asked, as I hadn’t answered earlier.

“I think so,” I replied, not completely sure myself. Every part of me still hurt, and I was shaking. “I need some water.” I said, also feeling woozy as I tried to take a step. Caius caught me before I stumbled and helped me walk back to the fortress.

It was chaos when I returned to the council chambers. Everyone was shouting, arguing, snapping. All fell silent as I entered, leaning against Caius as I still felt too weak to walk on my own. “Carina,” Theron began, his eyes revealing his worry. “We feel the change in the earth. We are unsure of what has happened, but we believe it to be related to Hiruk.”

“It is.” I interrupted him, not caring anymore about ceremony or manners.

“And you know this how?” Crein asked, looking speculative.

“I saw it.” I said, my voice unsteady. “He…he spoke…to me.” I stammered. Gasps echoed throughout the hall and I waited for their response.
