The sound of my alarm clock made me groan. “Why?”

I smacked the snooze button and rolled out of bed. I heard my roommate using the microwave in our dorm and she laughed loudly with whoever she was speaking with on the phone. As I pulled myself out of bed and over to the common area she looked over at me, eyebrow cocked, her blonde hair pulled back in a high ponytail looking like she just got back from her daily run. “No, I have to go. Bye.” She said into her phone before hanging up and sighing. “Look who’s finally up.” She commented and I shrugged in response. She was lucky I was even here. I usually avoided coming back to the dorm in fear of catching her and her boyfriend together. “Carina, you really should get out more.” She said, her voice softening. “I mean, you’re either in class, or the library. I try and have people over to socialize you a bit and you hide like a mouse.”

“Abby, I…I just…I don’t like big groups of people.” I muttered, starting to brush my teeth.

“One day, you’re going to have to get over that fear of yours. You can’t just be avoid everything you’re afraid of.”

“Yes I can.” I countered and she laughed.

“We’ll just see how long that works for you.” She giggled before waving to me and heading out the door. I looked over at the counter and sighed seeing she’d left her cell phone. I grabbed it and ran out the door behind her.

“Abby!” I stopped short at the sight of the flames before me. Towering flames licking up the walls of the hall. But no…this wasn’t the dorm hall. This was Pelor. The palace was burning, I was confused. Why was I in Pelor? What was happening? I ran out the door and tumbled over something large lying on the ground. I felt a shaky breath escape my lips as I glanced down at Adelaide, still, with glassy unblinking eyes. My hand flew to my mouth and I crawled backwards, and froze when my hands hit something cold and scaly. I turned and met those large scarlet eyes before letting out a blood curdling scream.

“Carina!” Caius shook me from my nightmare. I was out of breath, a cold sweat on my forehead. I was crying and Caius held me close against him. “Carina, what’s wrong? What happened?” He asked as I continued to sob. I was hyperventilating.

I was afraid. Not just because the nightmare had frightened me, because it wasn’t the first terrible dream I’d had recently. But, what really frightened me was a lot of my dreams tended to mean more. It usually meant something was about to happen.

I was afraid for Pelor and everyone there. Especially Adelaide.

I looked over at Alume. He was shaking. “Did you see?”

“No,” He replied. “Are you okay? She’s so pale, Caius.”

“You didn’t…You didn’t see?” I stammered. I was so confused, trying my best to calm down and come back to reality.

“What happened?” Alume asked, rubbing against my arm trying to soothe me. Caius’s hand reassuringly rubbed my back and I tried to slow my breathing.

“I-I saw, Pelor. It was-it was on fire.” I couldn’t get my words out as well as I wanted. I was still shaking, shocked with what I’d seen.

“On fire? But Carina, the palace is made of crystal. What do you mean it was on fire?” Alume asked, confused.

“It was Hiruk,” I explained. “I remember Adelaide telling me that dragon fire is different. It burns hotter. The palace was burning Alume. Of that I’m sure. And when I turned…all I could see were giant scarlet eyes.”
