Rohail
The doctor took a seat on a stool facing the examination table on which sat Inara. "How are you feeling, Inara?" He had done a general check up of her.
Inara looked at me, as if expecting me to give her the answer.
"Do you feel happy or sad?" Dr Ismael Sheikh asked her in a gentle tone, flipping open a notebook and ready to make notes.
My daughter had been suffering from high temperature ever since she woke up this morning, and Rabail had recommended Dr Ismael Sheikh, one of the best paediatricians in the city.
"Sad." Inara told him, glancing into her lap with a small pout.
I felt guilt tear through me. I had no doubt that she was upset due to mine and Alizay's messy divorce situation. But I had long since accepted that it was better for me to raise Inara on my own, then with an uncaring and cold mother like Alizay.
"Oh no!" Dr Ismael said. "It's okay, we'll take care of that. From today, we'll start a new and very special mission, okay? This is a secret mission known as Mission Happiness, and this stays between you, me and your Papa."
Inara looked curious. "What's that?"
"Well, your very important job is to find new things and games that will make you happy." Dr Ismael told her. "What makes you happy, Inara? A special toy? A favourite game?"
"Bubbles." Inara replied, shyly. "My kitty."
I ran a hand over her hair and kissed the top of her head.
"Very nice. So, if you are at home and feeling sad, I want you to go and play with Bubbles, okay?" Dr Ismael said. "Or, if Bubbles is sleeping, because cats like sleeping a lot, you can tell your Papa or any caring adult that you're feeling sad, okay?"
My daughter nodded.
"Good Girl." Dr Ismael looked at me. "Can I have a word with you, Mr Zulfiqar?"
"Please, just call me Rohail." I nodded.
Dr Ismael nodded at the female nurse to keep an eye on Inara, and the two of us walked to the other side of the room, where the doctor's desk was set up. We both took our seats on the opposite sides of the desk. "Physically, there's nothing wrong with Inara, but being a specialist on children's health, and being a father myself, I have seen kids develop fevers when they are distressed or seriously upset."
"Yes, it's not been easy for her." My jaw clenched as a scene flashed into my mind, where a toddler Inara had held up her arms towards Alizay crying, but Alizay had just ignored he and walked away, chatting to her friend on the phone. Eventually, I had ended up taking Innu out to the park to try and cheer her up.
"I have a colleague, a child psychiatrist, who runs a playgroup for little kids. It's not a therapy session, per se, but this biweekly play session has really helped kids. My colleague keeps and eye on their kids and their behaviours, and if she sees any issues, she not only helps the kids with those issues, but she also keeps the parents updated about anything of concern." Dr Ismael told me.
"And you're saying that it really helps?" I asked.
"It does. My younger daughter had to go there because she grew so attached to her mother that even if my wife left the room for a second, my daughter started crying uncontrollably. The sessions really helped her out. She's learning to be able to adapt in the absence of her mother." Dr Ismael told me. "Give it a try. Due to security rules, one female trusted adult is allowed to observe a session or two, in order to get an idea of how it works."
