Undeniably, Klaus was Melena's most trusted friend. And the same for the other way round. There wasn't a person either of them trusted more than one another, and their loyalty to each other was admired by everyone who had the pleasure of seeing it.

It was the year 1081 when Klaus and Melena first laid eyes on one another. It was a cold January that was filled with winter weather and on this particular night, snow. A New Year's party that was being held at Melena's Palace - or more her parent's palace. Coincidentally, it was a party the Mikaelson's were also attending. Upon meeting the Mikaelsons, introduced by Melena's own father, she admired the beauty of the family. Perhaps one more than the rest.

Melena's childhood was one filled with warfare and battle, ones she was often dragged into, however after her uncle was killed in crossfire she vowed she'd never participate again - willingly that is. Coming originally from Russia, it was a complete different scenery for Melena to be in England, and she often hated it. Up until she laid eyes on a certain Mikaelson did she hate it.

Ever since the day they met, Klaus and Melena were able to trust one another shortly after becoming friends, confiding in each other about their past horrors, stories that only lived in their heads. Freeing for both of them, Melena felt like she could finally breathe past the suffocation of her past. Klaus was finally able to release his emotions of what his father had done to him, able to speak of his mistreatment without the judgement and overly noticeable sympathy, but instead with someone who understood.

What Melena was unaware of that night the Mikaelsons and her met is that the party was one where she'd meet her suitor. Her father had been certain that she'd marry before she was 18, however Melena knew herself she didn't want to marry off to someone she couldn't care less about. It became a constant row between the father and daughter, a constant back and forth conversation that never ended. And so, that night, Melena's father had found her a suitor for her instead. Her father revealed it only a month after the party, one unexpected Sunday, that she'd be marrying a wealthy farmer over in Louisiana.

In reaction to the news, Melena was eager to leave before the upcoming date of the wedding. Planning secretly, Melena confided with her second family, the Mikaelsons, and expressed her eagerness to leave the forced engagement. None was more prepared to get her out of the arrangement than Klaus, and his family was well aware. In the end, it was decided that the family was going to run, and they'd bring Melena with them as an addition to the family.

And so they did, they left England and they didn't look back. Melena often wondered what her father's reaction would be, what her fiance that she hadn't had the chance of meeting yet would have reacted. Only, each time a thought cropped up in her mind, she'd be interrupted by a different family of hers, one that treat her with such care she finally felt worthy of, not just being a perfected daughter with no flaws, but finally a human.
