I'm not sure this is safe

venuus

It takes nearly ten minutes for this new teacher to arrive at our detention. Hawk and I used that time to focus on ourselves. I was completing my homework while he was just on his phone.

Oh yeah, Mr. Juin had just left the box with our phones on the table, so we grabbed them.

When the teacher steps in, I immediately recognize her.

"Venuus and Kiari." She hums, reading the detention paper as she walks in. "Why on earth are they sending my students to detention?" she says curiously, her face beaming.

I raise my head to see Mrs. Drake, my physics teacher from last year, approaching us. I'm assuming Hawk is in her class this year because it's the only thing that makes sense, right?

My question is answered when she asks him how he likes her class. Hawk responds graciously, and they converse for a few moments before she goes up to me.

"Stuck in here with a boy, huh?" She grins. I nod my head and smile, my face flushed with embarrassment. "What happened?" She asks.

"Nothing bad. Mr. Juin was upset with us because..." I pause, trying to think of a suitable approach. "We were disrupting his class." I notice Hawk is looking over at me with a smile on his face. He definitely heard my crap-ass excuse.

She gives a slow, skeptical nod. Did I forget to mention she's really good at being able to tell when someone lies?

"I'm sure that's what it was." She jokes as she rests her hand on my shoulder. "But it's your birthday, and I don't want you or anybody else to be here. So, I'm gonna let you guys go."

I look directly at Hawk, and he returns my gaze. I shrug, and he stands up.

"Are you serious?" He wonders aloud.

"Yes. Go. I can't leave you guys here by yourselves." She says walking toward the door.

Hawk and I both race to get our backpacks. We trail behind her, thanking her several times. She chuckles and leads us to the front door, where we all make small talk on the way. Mrs. Drake mentions how harsh Mr. Juin is and how we aren't the first students she has pulled out of his detentions.

"Do you both have a ride?" She asks as we reach the door. We both nod, and she walks away. "Keep yourselves safe, you two. And, of course, happy birthday, Venuus." She waves to us and I thank her.

Hawk and I watch as she goes out of the school and into her car. We remain silent until he turns to face me.

"Do you actually have a ride?"

I take my phone from my backpack. I load the Uber app and show him the white screen that reads the app's name.

He hums in response. "All right, let's go to Jamie's place and wait there."

My brows pull together. "Where in the world is that?" I question. He points over to the houses that are visible from the school. "All right, what's the address?"

He snatches my phone from my grasp and places it in his pocket.

"Wait," He then takes out his phone and opens his Uber app. I lean against the door, anticipating what he's about to do. He hands me the phone for me to put in my address. I look up at him, confused. "Let me pay."

My eyes widen, and I begin backing up to open the door. "No, I got it. My mom gave me her credit card."

"It'd be like a birthday present from me to you. Since I didn't get you anything."

Yes, how on earth was he supposed to know it was my birthday? I hope he doesn't actually feel bad for not getting me anything.

"Please don't say no..." He says trailing off.
