Me
Cass...
I have so much to tell you.
I stuff my phone into the back pocket of my pants, hoping I won't get in too much trouble for coming in late.
I came down from the suite, I ran down an embarrassing number of stories. Mainly because I didn't want to run into anyone I knew. And no one that works here actually takes the stairs.
I stopped in the middle of them and called Mike. I explained my "reason" for not being there at 12, and luckily he's just letting me off with a warning.
He told me I could come in at four and work until midnight, which kinda sucks because I don't want to stay here that long, again. I already spent 24 hours here.
I walk inside the hotel again, this time in my actual work uniform. I flatten my shirt down and take a deep breath, preparing myself for another long night.
I notice Carla, one of my other coworkers sitting at the front desk. Even though I knew Maria wasn't coming in today, I was hoping I would see her out of everyone else.
Carla. A manipulative, insistent old lady who I work with. She doesn't like me because she thinks I don't take this job seriously and I just know she's gonna talk my ear off today.
I subtly roll my eyes and walk over to the desk, preparing myself for her yapping.
"Didn't think you were gonna show." She mumbles, watching as I walk slowly to her. "Is there a reason you're this late?"
I walk around the desk and into the lounge room. I toss my bag into the closet and clock in. "I woke up late, that's all."
When I walk out, I see her typing a few things into the computer. She avoids my presence as I start to ruffle through a few pages the earlier shift had left me.
"I think it's time for you to grow up. Waking up late isn't an excuse anymore." Based on the tone of her voice, I can tell she's annoyed. Probably rolled her eyes at me.
I try to hold back any smart remarks, pursing my lips together. I squint my eyes at the back of her gray hair. I'm struggling to keep my composure already. "I know, it won't happen again."
I see her nod her head slowly and her old creaky bones straighten. She stands up and points to a few items on the opposite side of the desk. "I'm glad. But I think that was left for you. Take it away, there's not enough space to let it stay here."
I furrow my brows and peer over her head, trying to get a look at what she's talking about. I notice there's a black, velvet textured box with a white ribbon under a bouquet of red carnations.
I tilt my head and look around. "For me?"
She nods in response and I walk around her. I slowly reach beside her and grab the flowers. I inspect them, twisting and turning them in my hands.
Whoever they're from, how on earth did they know I liked carnations?
I grab the box in my other hand and walk into the back room.
Setting the flowers down, I sit on the white-leathered couch. "Pretty box," I whisper to myself. I un-tie the white ribbon quickly, excitement rumbling through my body.
