The Ducks were called to the principal's right after morning assembly, he said something about having a talk with them. A new school, new environment and for some a whole new state. His words better be damn comforting.
As they walked into the principal's office, the vibe of not just him but the school was immediately caught. Old, stuffy and bland.
The smell of the office alone reminded Eurydice of her grandmother's bathroom. It smelled like eucalyptus and dust with a hint of mothballs.
They split up to different corners of the spacious office since Buckley hadn't arrived yet.
An old photograph caught Eurydice's eye, "Damn, he knows Wayne Newton."
Kenny went up to Charlie who wasn't standing too far from her, the boy seemed rather worried about something, and his tone was uneasy.
"Charlie, man, this is not a good start to our year."
Their captain chuckled and patted Kenny on the back, "Don't worry Kenny, these prepsters aren't gonna do anything to us.
Eurydice went up Kenny, "You're gonna do fine, those jerks in the hall won't lay a finger on you."
Kenny sighed and nodded reluctantly, the image of those boys engraved in his memory.
"Woah check it out Antsville."
The team crowded around the huge ant farm that was situated in the middle of the office, they watched as the thousands of ants scurried between each other, "Look at them go."
They were so captivated by the ants that they didn't even realise that Buckley had arrived in his office.
"You can learn a lot from ants."
Buckley smiled at them through the other side of the glass, taking the group of teens by surprise.
"He almost gave me a heart attack." Eurydice grumbled as she grabbed onto her chest.
Buckley kept his glasses before he walked closer to the team, "These Brazilian fire ants can teach you a lot about successful societal structure. Come here, You see there's one queen in there. The rest are dedicated worker ants. Everybody pulls their weight. Nobody complains, there's harmony and growth. Same here at Eden Hall."
Eurydice scoffed, "There's something wrong if no one complains."
Julie nodded in agreement, "He's never read a dystopian novel in his life."
"And old geezer like him? Please."
Buckley smiled at the students, "You are the workers, the backbone."
Russ raised his eyebrows, "And you're the queen?"
The team snickered before Buckley sighed and dismissed them, he didn't even give the talk he asked them to show up for.
"Great, he's sick of us already." Eurydice said, slightly amused.
Kenny shrugged, "You heard what that senior said, we're here for image. Not skill."
Fulton grumbled, "Fucking preps."
"Maybe we should just make the best of the situation, we're in one of the best schools in Minnesota." Julie said, always the voice of reason.
"Hopefully the students here aren't as bad as those guys in the hall."

Eurydice, Julie and Kenny sat next to each other during English, agreeing to stick together in most of their classes.
"Every Monday you'll have a practice quiz, every Wednesday you'll have a real quiz and every Friday you'll have an exam."
They couldn't believe it, first day of school and they find out there is no exam schedule, the whole semester is the schedule.
"Hey, can I burrow a pencil? Left my whole pencil case in my locker."
A new unfamiliar voice rang in Eurydice's ear, she turned around to see a boy, he looked well put together and slipped right in with the rest of the students of Eden Hall.
Eurydice wordlessly hands the mystery guy a pencil and turned back, unwilling to miss a single second of the intense class.
The boy however, didn't seem to want to end their one sided conversation so soon, "You're Eurydice right? One of the Ducks?"
She turned around slightly, mostly giving the boy the cold shoulder, "Mhm."
"Why so serious sweetheart?"
Eurydice glared at the boy, "I am not your sweetheart. Why can't you just shut up, take my pencil and leave me alone screwboy?"
Eurydice payed no more mind to the boy for the rest of the class, he tried again and again to get her attention but she ignored all of them, opting to wait until after class to show her annoyance.
As the students finally streamed out, Eurydice grabbed Julie and Kenny and their arms and pulled them far away from the classroom, her footsteps picking up their pace as she heard unfamiliar feet shuffle behind them.
Thankfully, when they reached their new lockers, Fulton was already there waiting for them, as the three of them approached, with both Kenny and Julie still completely in the dark, the footsteps that were following close behind them seemed to have stopped and disappeared.
"What's going on?" Julie asked worriedly, unsure why Eurydice was suddenly acting strange.
Eurydice looked around and didn't spot the boy near them, "I think the guy who sat behind me during English was following us. He was acting really weird and kept trying to talk to me."
Fulton who was the tallest of the four peered over Eurydice's head, "Where is he?"
"Think he left when we got here, I'll try to get his name next time."
Julie rubbed Eurydice's shoulder, "It's probably just some jerk trying to get under our skin."
Ya that's what it was.
She couldn't help but feel slightly uneasy. She didn't feel protected or taken care of, Dean was usually the one that handled that.
But he wasn't here anymore.
So much for always being there to protect her, lies.
That's what it was. All of Dean's words and promises.
They were just little white lies.
As they walked off to their next class, Eurydice couldn't help but have a double take behind her shoulder. No matter what she still felt watched.
Or at least followed.
