i was at my aunts house helping her cook for the family. my mom was here and so was tavares'. this was the first time seeing them since the funeral and although i thought today was gonna go bad, it was actually going good.
"take this to the table ken," she said handing me the dish of mashed potatoes and greens. i took them to the dining room where everyone was waiting.
"dang is the food done?" one of my little cousins asked.
"right cos i'm starving," my mom agreed. i mugged her as i turned back to my cousin.
"yeah we just bringin it in hollon," i went back into the kitchen and grabbed my phone from on top of the microwave.

"let's go eat," my aunt said walking out the kitchen. i followed her to the dining room and sat beside tavares' mom. she kissed my forehead before resting her head on my shoulder causing me to smile big.
i saw my mom at the corner of my eye mugging us but i could care less. tavares' mom was more of a mother than she was.
after we said grace we all dug in to our food.
"it's good to see you all again," my grandma started, "we should do this more often,"
"i agree i haven't seen anyone since... you know," tavares' mom said.
"at least everybody stay in touch with each other," my aunt said.
"everybody but tina," my grandma said eyeing my mom.
"not this again," my mom said rolling her eyes, "i'm grown and busy as fuck nobody gotta worry about me,"
"busy chasing around men," tavares' mom muttered.
"chileee.." i said cutting into my steak.
"you stay worrying about me and not yourself that's why yo son dead," my mom said causing everyone to gasp.
"the fuck did you just say?" my aunt said getting up but tavares' mom sat her down with a smile on her face.
"leave her," she shook her head, "cos everybody at this table knows i take care of my kids good. including yours,"
"i know that's right," i said lifting up my fork.
"that's sad you defending her instead of you're own mother," my mom turned to me.
"get a load of this guy," i rolled my eyes. i didn't even want to acknowledge her too much. "why are you even here?" i asked.
"despite tina's behaviour, that's no way to talk to your mother ken. treat her with respect," my grandmother spoke up.
"my teacher always says respect is never given but earned," my lil cousin said.
"right and she don't deserve no type of respect from me," i mugged her, "aunt linda been taking care of me all my life and where she been at? fucking niggas here, there and everywhere. who puts a MEN over her own child? and you tellin me to treat her with her respect, pftt,"

"and you gon give it to her huh?" i looked at my grandma and she looked away. i nodded and grabbed my plate.
"ima go eat this shit at home, thanks for the food aunty."
