This situation was worse than I could've ever imagined and all I wanted in that moment was to disappear. Every gaze from his friends, who sat around him, seemed to burn into me. I felt exposed, with nowhere to hide.

"Well, happy birthday to you," I mumbled awkwardly, forcing a half-smile as I prepared to make my escape, "but this is definitely my cue to leave." The last thing I wanted was to stay and draw more attention to myself.

Before I could slip away, Crystal kissed her teeth sharply and grabbed my wrist, pulling me closer towards her. "Why do you always have to be so rude to my friends?" she scolded, eyes narrowing as she held me in place. "This is Sydney, the girl I've been telling you about!"

Slaughter let out a dry, humorless laugh, his eyes still fixed on me as he took a slow pull from his spliff. His gaze never left me, not even for a second. He blew out the smoke, assessing me coldly, dragging his eyes up and down in a way that made me squirm. "Your friend, yeah?" he nodded. "Last time I checked, we weren't fucking with each other no more." His eyes lingered deliberately on my outfit, and then he locked eyes with me again, a wicked glint dancing in them. "Ain't that right, Sydney?"

Crystal's face contorted in confusion. "Wait, what?" She looked back and forth between us, clearly confused. "You two know each other?"

I could only nod, unable to get a word out. My throat felt tight.

"Something like that," Slaughter replied bluntly, his eyes glued to me. He knew exactly what he was doing, and he was doing it well. The discomfort he was causing me was no accident.

"Excuse me can I get through?" A female voice suddenly sounded from behind me

I shifted slightly to allow the girl to pass, noticing that she looked oddly familiar. As she stepped forward and turned around, I recognised her – it was Leah, that girl from Merkz's birthday. She looked nice, dressed in a zebra-print two-piece set..

She barely acknowledged Crystal and me as she focused on Slaughter

She barely acknowledged Crystal and me as she focused on Slaughter. Leaning down, she pulled him into a hug, making sure to press him against her exposed cleavage as she murmured, "Happy birthday, babes."

I inhaled deeply, trying to keep my composure, but it was difficult as I watched her pull away from her hug and kiss his cheek, leaving her lip combo on his cheek. I couldn't help it—my face screwed up in disgust at the interaction taking place in front of me.

"Leah, move, man!" he snapped, pushing her back with a look of frustration plastered on his face. "Can't you see I'm in the middle of a conversation? And since when did you think it was alright to put your lips anywhere near my face?"
