"I have to tell you something." Max says quietly, glancing down at Ophelia as she laid with her head in his lap, watching the movie intently. "What's up?" Ophelia asks, looking up at him as he begins running a hand through her hair. Max took a breath, "Never mind." He mumbles quickly, and Ophelia laughs, "Oh, come on. You know you can tell me anything." She says, taking his free hand into hers and playing with his fingers as she waits for him to speak. "You know a couple weeks ago when we kissed, and I said that I didn't think anything should happen between us cause I'm not good at relationships?" Ophelia could tell he was nervous by the way he avoided her eyes, his voice nearly shaking as he spoke. "Yeah." She nods, sitting up and resting her head against the couch as she looks at him. "Well, I've been thinking, and... I don't know. I feel like I could be better for you. If you still like me, and you want to give things a try, obviously." He says quickly, like he had to get the words out or he would never say them. Ophelia opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came to her brain. Of course she liked him, but there was also that whole situation with Sam. If she was with Max, that would have to end.Ophelia didn't respond, instead, she leaned forward and kissed him. She needed to stall just long enough to decide what to do, but Max's lips on hers weren't really helping Sam's case. "Is that a yes?" Max asks into the kiss, and Ophelia pulls away for a second to let out a breath. "I don't want to rush into anything, Max. Especially because your dad just passed away, I don't want you to commit to anything you're not sure of. You haven't exactly been thinking straight the past couple weeks." She chews on her lip, studying his facial expression. "Okay. You're right. So... does this mean we can't still make out?" He asks with a grin on his face. Ophelia laughs, cupping her hands around his cheeks and pulling him back in. It wasn't even thirty seconds before the door to the room opened, and Ophelia groaned at the interruption.
She dropped her forehead against Max's, "We seriously need to start finding more private spaces." She said, mirroring his smile as he looked over at the door. "Weren't you supposed to not be here today?" Max asks curiously, seeing Sam take off his shoes as he looks up at them. A scowl grew on his face as he saw the two of them, but then he shook his head before opening the door more for the person behind him to come in. "I was picking him up from the airport." Sam mumbles. "Oh, my god." Ophelia exclaims, standing up quickly from the couch. "Ophelia?" The boy asks, surprised, "Sam, you didn't tell me she went here! Or that you two are friends now." He nudges Sam playfully before walking up to the girl and giving her a tight hug. "I haven't seen you in forever, Jake. How are you?" She asks excitedly, hugging him back before pulling away. "I know! When was it? Jessie's sweet sixteen?" He raises an eyebrow, and Ophelia nods. "Something like that. How have you been?"
"Sorry to cut this whole reunion short, but Jake and I have shit we need to do." Sam says, opening the door back up for Ophelia and motioning for her to leave. "I'm here for Max. I'm not leaving unless he tells me to." She crosses her arms stubbornly, standing there with a look on her face that she could tell was pissing Sam off. "It's my room too. Get the fuck out." He says through clenched teeth, still holding the door open. Ophelia turns to Max, waiting for him to tell her to leave. "Were you dropped on your head as a baby? What don't you understand about 'get out'?" Ophelia almost laughed at the pathetic insult, but she held herself back. "What the fuck is your problem?" She narrowed her eyes at him. "Obviously it's you." Sam puts his hand on her back and pushes her out of the room before slamming the door behind her. She stood in the hall for a moment, wondering what she had done to make him switch up again.
🌑🌑🌑🌑🌑
Ophelia slung her backpack over her shoulder, looking herself over in the mirror one last time to make sure she was presentable before heading to class. As she exited her dorm and made her way outside, she had a sinking feeling in her stomach. She couldn't explain it. She had no reason to be nervous, but something in her mind was telling her turn around and go back inside. She shook it off, thinking it was just the nerves of having to see her professor for the first time after Sam had told her what he wanted from her. She finally got outside, looking around for anything out of the ordinary, anything that would've made her wish she had turned back around. She let out a sigh when she didn't see any signs of immediate danger, unlocking her car and opening her door.
