the test

Ten days. That's how long it had been since Sam had said a word to Ophelia. He hadn't texted, called, stopped by her room, anything. She couldn't even begin to guess what she should do. What if he found out she thought she was pregnant? What if he hated her for not saying she loved him back? What if him and Joanna were now spending every waking moment together? Ophelia had no idea. The last time they had interacted was when he said he loved her, and she practically hit the ground running. When she had gotten back to her dorm that night, she told Jessie everything. Except the pregnancy scare, of course. Jake was still the only one who knew about that.

She heard a soft knock on her door, and for a moment, she wondered if it might be Sam. She realized immediately after that Jake had been on his way, adamant that she took the test today. She opened her door, letting him inside. "Hey." He smiles at her, but he didn't seem too thrilled to be there. "Jake, you don't have to be here. I can do this myself." Ophelia furrows her eyebrows, seeing that he was clearly in a bad mood. "No, it's not you." Jake sighs, rubbing his face before taking the two tests out of the plastic bag. "What is it, then?" She asks as she studies the tests, looking over the directions and chewing on her bottom lip. "My girlfriend broke up with me on the way here." He mumbles, letting out a soft sigh. Ophelia looks up at him with a sad expression across her face, "Oh, god. I'm so sorry." She frowns, and Jake only shakes his head a bit. Ophelia could tell by the way Sam talked about the two of them that Jake really loved this girl, and it broke her heart to see him like this. "I'll be okay. We've got bigger things to worry about." Jake motioned to the tests in her hands.

"We can talk about it after. Okay?" She asks, knowing he wouldn't talk about it before she took the test. Jake nods slightly, opening the door and letting her walk out first before following her to the bathroom. As Ophelia went to turn the knob to the bathroom, she heard a voice calling her name from down the hall. Her and Jake both turned immediately to see Sam standing there with a confused look on his face. Ophelia nearly had a panic attack, handing Jake the tests behind her back so Sam couldn't see. Jake slipped them into his pocket, watching as Sam got closer to them. "What the fuck is all this?" He asks, glancing between his brother and Ophelia. "Under what circumstances would you two ever need to go into a bathroom together?" He squints at them, his words holding a mixture of sadness, betrayal, and anger. Ophelia froze. What was she supposed to tell him? She couldn't tell him the truth, obviously. What could she even tell him that wouldn't make him think they were hooking up?

"Got it." Sam nods after the silence, looking to the side. Ophelia felt a lump building in her throat. She knew she had to make a decision, and she had to do it fast. She glanced at Jake for any help, but he only sighed. This was her choice to make. "How long?" Sam asks quietly, motioning between the two of them. "How long have you two been fucking?" His voice drops, blinking back tears as he looks at them. "Sam," Ophelia says sadly, and Sam shakes his head. "Don't." He sounded more disappointed than anything, and Ophelia swallows. She reaches behind her, slipping her hand into Jake's back pocket and taking out the test. Jake gives her a look, and she only sighs. "This is why we're going into the bathroom." Ophelia says quietly, taking a step closer to Sam so she could hand him the test. The expression on his face made it clear that his heart had just broken into a million pieces. "You're... with..." He looks at her, then at Jake, and Ophelia watched as his bottom lip quivered.

She didn't understand at first, but once she did, her heart dropped. She had never seen him cry before, and she never wanted to again. He looked so utterly heartbroken at the idea that it made her want to cry too. "Sammy." Ophelia whispers, shaking her head quickly, "I haven't slept with Jake since I was 16." She puts her hands on Sam's face, watching his expression start to change. "He just brought up the idea. I got sick in the car with him, and he told me the reason for all my nausea could be... well, this." She glances down at the test, wiping away a tear from Sam's cheek. "Oh." He mumbles, looking down at her. His eyebrows raise after a second, his eyes widening slightly. "Oh. Oh, fuck." He says, taking a deep breath. "Should... should you take it?" He asks, knitting his eyebrows and handing her the test back frantically, like it was hurting him to touch it. "Probably." Ophelia whispers, looking down at it as if it were a bomb about to go off. "I've been holding it off for too long." She chews on her lip, looking back up at Sam. "How long?" He furrows his eyebrows, glancing between her and Jake. Ophelia scratches her head, "Um, since the day we last talked."
