The familiar heat bounced off her neck, she could feel the suffocating, black smoke swarming in her chest, making it hard to breathe. Hot, burning tears ran down her face as she stood in shock for a while, though it felt like hours. Her mentor Lillith arrived after learning about what had happened. She didn't like her all that well but the comfort of having someone gave her relief. With that they walked away, she was gently placed into the car then the door was closed with a
*SLAM*
Amelia jumped in her skin slightly, she realised now that she was in a world of her own and though she hated thinking about that night, it was like it had infected her brain. She was often puzzled why she couldn't forget, she was young and still confused about what happened, amongst other things.
She then felt a gentle elbow nudge on her arm which made her realise she zoned out once again. It was Wionna. Amelia hadn't made any friends at the Foster home, nor did she want to, but she liked to think that Wionna Park was the closest she had to one, they'd known eachother 2 years now and were the only ones their age. For the mean time.
"Hey, look" Wionna whispered rather loudly, diverting her eyes over to a new girl.
She was unusually tall for her age, a Latino girl wearing a red beanie that didn't fit her head right just yet, a white and purple striped t-shirt, ripped jeans and converse but she was all roughed up. She was trouble.
Though she was quiet and didn't seem up for talking ,which Amelia would prefer if all the kids were like that, she took an instant dislike to her. She couldn't help but think 'what mess did she get herself into?' or 'is she gonna kill me in my sleep?'. Pretty dark for a 7yr old, but hey, you can never be too careful these days and certainly not in this place.
After being nudged for the second time by her acquaintance Amelia decided that she really had to stop zoning out so much and should listen to what the staff and Park are saying.
"She's our age! Isn't that cool?" Wionna exclaimed, smile from cheek to cheek.
Amelia was harsh but she wasn't mean, she didn't want to let her own emotions towards the outside girl put Park down so, she contain them. Like her friend Becca said, 'Sometimes you can choose not to be a dick'. She's not the best influence but not the worst either.
Amelia hummed in response then looked the girl up and down one more time.
"We hope that you'll all welcome Lucía with open arms." announced one staff member
Amelia was told by that same woman "if she had nothing nice to say then to keep it in her head" and ever since then what played in her mind everytime she heard that whiney voice was 'Pft sure whatever'.
"Hmmm..Wionna! Why don't you show Lucía to her room?"
Amelia's head darted to Wionna's, giving her a look which read 'don't leave me'. With that the young Park mouthed 'sorry' and stood up, introducing herself to the new girl....Amelia had forgotten her name already, but there was no one in her mind to judge, and then they walked off, around the corner and eventually out of sight.
'That little bi-..witch. She totally did that on purpose!' the blight thought whilst glaring at the woman, her name was Margret by the way, she was a grumpy old twat.
With a sigh Amelia also stood up and made her way to her room, closing the door behind her. She climbed onto her bed and layed staring at the ceiling. She then turned over to face the only photo that was salvaged from her old home. It had her, her twin siblings, Edric and Emira, then the youngest of the Blights, Amity. Amelia despised the twins when they were born but Amity was different, she loved her from the start. Tears started to swell in her eyes which she wiped with her sleeve. She turned onto the opposite side, now facing the wall, covering herself with the paper thin blanket and hunk of boulder they liked to call a mattress. She stared for a while but slowly started to drift off. Amelia was smart ,despite being so young, she knew it was bad to dwell on the past but she couldn't help it, so this night and every other she would think about her family, imagine her parents saying goodnight to her, sometimes it helped her to fall asleep, other times it didn't.
This time she dozed off, she had a smile on her face after imagining the warmth of her mother's kiss on her forehead but something was different, after that, all she could think about is that girl.
