Chapter 12
"One man practicing sportsmanship is far better than a hundred teaching it."-Knute Rockne
There comes a point in a game where you may not exactly be the best sportsman, where you really aren't playing in a game, but fighting in a war. There may be a time where you want to stop playing the game completely and just punch someone right in the nose. At some point an athlete has felt this feeling. I've never been one to play dirty, but in some cases it is just necessary.
2 hours earlier
"There is no way I am going." I yelled at Jaxon.
He rolled his eyes, then opened the passenger side door to his car. I stood and looked at it, not walking another step towards it no matter how much he begged or pleaded with me. I wasn't getting in.
"Stop being a baby about it, they will love you!" I raised an eyebrow at him.
Ya right. I thought to myself
"How can you be so sure?" I questioned him.
"Because I love you, and you're cute, so it's pretty much impossible to not like you." I resisted a smile, but was unsuccessful.
I am pretty adorable.
I reluctantly went into the car even though I swore to myself I wouldn't. I heard him quietly laugh to himself as he made his way around to the drivers side. He started the car, and was quickly off of school grounds.
"So tell me their names again?"
"Molly is the one with the short blonde hair, she has a really high voice and will occasionally make an inappropriate joke. Carson is the guy with the hair."
"What about his hair?" I asked.
"Oh you'll be able to tell which one he is."
I nodded my head.
"Hayden is the shortest one. Katie will probably be hanging on Brett. That's all you need to know!"
"Ok so Molly is the blond that tells the jokes, Carson has the hair, Hayden is the short one, and Brett will be attached to Katie." I reviewed out loud.
"There is absolutely no reason to worry. I spent my freshman and sophomore year with them and they are the best people you will meet."
I closed my eyes. I honestly had no clue why I was so nervous about meeting them. I had met plenty of Jaxon's friends. It may have something to do with the fact that I had to play a game against them, and how they perceived me now would determine how they would play against me in a game. If they see me as a nice person now they may not beat up on me later. The little people always have it the worst in a game.
I heard the engine stop, and was surprised we had already reached his house. There were two cars parked in the driveway, both of them nice.
Before I could reach for my door, Jaxon was already on his way to open it for me.
"Remember what I told you. Just be yourself." He said, tucking a loose piece of hair beind my ear.
He put his hands on my shoulder then began pushing me toward the door. It swung open before we could open it ourselves.
"Molly!" Jaxon yelled. He quickly lifted his hands off my back, then went forward to hug her.
Her hair was short, and it was dyed a blonde, almost a white color. She was taller than me, a lot taller than me. Unlike myself, she wore an excessive amount of makeup that kind of made her look like a racoon.
"You must be Samantha, I'm Molly." She held out her hand for me to shake. When I reached out to grab it she pulled me into a hug.
"Call me Sam." Jaxon chuckled to himself.
"Jaxon sure does know how to pick them!" Carson said. His voice was booming, and left an echo throughout Jaxon's large house.
Jaxon was right, I didn't have any trouble telling who was who. Carson was easy to figure out. His hair was green and an ugly shade of yellow, spiked into a mohawk.
Hayden was the shortest of the group, but his idea of short wasn't the short I was hoping for. She was 5'6" maybe 5'7", and according to her she was the shorty of the team.
Molly was something else. She was fun, exciting, friendly, and a little bit of a free spirit. She somewhat reminded me of Alice from the Twilight series. I hadn't even realized the blue streak in her hair until I was up close.
Katie never really said anything. She reluctantly shook my hand, but didn't say anything else. I got the feeling there was tension between her and Jaxon. She never left Brett's side though. He had his armed rapped around her the entire time. In a way it was kind of gross how clingy they were to each other. It reminded me of how a mother always has a baby on her hip.
We spent most of the time talking about basketball, which in my opinion can never get old because it is constantly changing. I was beginning to like Brett, but then he mentioned he was a Heat fan. I was more of a Carson kind of person. He likes the Bulls, who happen to be the best team in the NBA. Molly and Hayden both voted for the Knicks. Katie didn't say anything, but I had a feeling whatever Brett liked, she liked.
"As fun as this has been, I've got to go get ready to beat some Tiger tail."
"Ya we better get going to. We've got to kill a few Rams." Molly replied. She smiled, then began heading towards the door.
1 hour Later
"Measuring in at 5', weighing a whopping 99 pounds, wearing the number thirteen jersey, your senior point guard Sam Shoey!"
The crowd erupted into loud yells. In the background I could hear the faint sound of a bass drum coming from the band section.
"For the tigers, your number 10 5'7" junior point guard Hayden Luxton." There wasn't very many people in the stands, but the cheers were loud. She shook the referee's hand, the coaches, then the starters from Schuyler.
The tallest girl for them was 6'1" which beat out our tallest girl by four inches. She got the jump ball, which was no surprise. We were going to get killed inside, which is why I had to step up my three ball.
Katie ended up guarding me. Her attitude didn't change. I then realized her problem wasn't Jaxon, but me. She kept shoving, and pushing off with her arm. The refs didn't help the situation. They were actually in her favor. I had been called with my first foul in the first minute of play.
I intercepted the ball from an inbounds play, and I was already halfway up the court. I heard people in the stands yelling "Wolf," Which meant someone was running behind be trying to steal or hit the ball away. I could feel a girl coming up on my right side. I went up for the layup but was immediatley slammed to the ground. I could hear the crowd yelling. I looked up to see Katie standing over me. I held up my hand for her to help me up, but she just took a few steps backward. Megan came to my side and helped me up, still eyeing Katie.
I went to the line to shoot my free throws.
"Off maroon, white ball." I stared at a bald headed man, who was supposed to be one of the best refs in the district.
"What?" I asked the ref, nearly yelling.
"Off you're knee, white ball."
"What the hell ref? She slammed me to the ground!"
"Watch it thirteen." He said. I clenched my hands in a fist.
"You called a foul on me when I was on the otherside of the court and you're not going to call a foul on her for flattening me to the floor?" He formed his hands into a T formation.
Fucking great. Third foul. Technical.
I walked over to the bench before I said or did anything to get myself into more trouble.
"Jordan." He said pointing to her on the bench.
