"He should be fine, just make sure he rests and doesn't do anything too strenuous" Ines told two of the Italian Mafia men, a man laid on the table in front of her.
"We should be able to do that" One of the men muttered, almost feeling awkward in Ines' presence.
"You'll also have to change his dressing every two hours to make sure it doesn't get infected" Ines added as she packed up the medical equipment, not seeing the confused and almost horrified looks on the men's faces.
"We don't know how to do that, you're going to have to do it" One of the men told her, a hint of arrogance in his tone as Ines just turned around with an eyebrow raised.
"I'm not the one who probably has their lives depending on this man's survival, just figure it out yourselves" Ines spoke, a bitter tone laced in her voice.
It was the third man in the last two weeks who she had treated, all with the same abdominal wounds. Ines had assumed that those men's lives would be in danger if the man wasn't saved, due to the fact Ines couldn't save another man- and the Mafia men who brought him in had disappeared in thin air, never to be seen again.
"Here, you'll need these" Ines told them, passing them the dressing and scissors.
"Thanks" One of the men muttered, which surprised Ines. Rarely did any Mafia man show any kind of gratitude, especially after Amara's reign began.
Suddenly, Ines stopped packing up her equipment as she felt her phone buzz in her pocket. Immediately, she picked it up, cursing slightly at the number that was calling her.
"This is Dr. Maxwell, what can I do for you?" Ines spoke through the phone, putting on her more polite and well-spoken voice on.
"I'm sorry, but we have an issue- you need to come here immediately" The man on the other end of the phone spoke, causing Ines to drop all of her stuff on the table and focus on what he had to say.
"What is it? Is she hurt?" Ines asked but she was quickly interrupted.
"No, she's physically fine, but you really must come down here now" The man told her and Ines just took a deep breath, cantering herself and trying to calm herself down.
"I'm on my way" Ines told him, ending the phone and walking out of the room, ignoring the faces the men were pulling at the dressing in their hands.
Ines' hands were shaky and she felt her throat start to close up, making it harder to breathe by every second. She continued to take deep breaths down every corridor and every corner, but she stopped once no one was around.
Ines rested her shoulder against the wall, focusing on her breathing and lowering her heart rate. She felt as if it was beating out of her chest, sweat starting to form on her forehead.
However, she managed to regulate her breathing, starting to rush down the corridor to make up for the time she just wasted.
She had tried everything to make sure she was okay, even if it meant sacrificing everything she had. But, sometimes, people don't want saving and no one can ever change that fact.
She just wished she would be the first to prove that that fact was wrong.

"I'm here to see Principal Matthews" Ines spoke to the woman sat at the desk, only to find her looking her up and down with a sour look on her face.
"Down the hall and to your right" The woman told her, a bitterness in her tone as Ines was slightly taken aback.
She had got used to the judgement from people who knew her, who watched her life turn to shit. But strangers who had no idea what had happened had decided to look down on her, as if they were better than her- and that's what Ines hated.
