"I don't like vegetables."
"Really? You're an infant."
Avi puffed his cheeks at me and I laughed. He looked absolutely ridiculous. I watched him poke his fork at the head of broccoli on his plate before I picked it up and ate it.
"That was mine!"
"You don't like vegetables."
He squinted at me before eating a piece of the steak he'd ordered.
Before we finished our date, we'd talked about everything from how we were as kids to his weird obsession with Simon and Garfunkel. Avi finished he last bite on my plate before we left together. He walked me home again even though he lived on the other side of town and needed to catch a train back home.
"You don't have to always walk me home, you know."
"I know. I just want to spend as much time with you as possible." He grabbed my hand again and intertwined our fingers. I loved the feeling of our hands together. There was this renegade strand of his hair hanging in his face. We always ended up stopped at the same light. I took the opportunity and pushed the hair behind his ear.
I felt his hand wrap around my waist and I watched his eyes as they watched my lips. I let go of his hand and wrapped my arms around his shoulders. He smiled and kissed the tip of my nose.
"You're beautiful."
"Kiss me."
He nodded and pressed his palm against my back before his lips met mine. My heart was racing to the point where I wondered if he could hear it, or if he could feel it against his chest.
There was something surreal about standing at an under-populated intersection with Avi's arms loosely hanging around my waist as we kissed. It was like everything was falling into place, but falling out of place at the same time. The city continued to move, time continued to move, but we just stood still taking in each other's atmosphere. There was a fire deep within me, but a fear that I would do something wrong. The silence of the sleeping city around us gave us this privacy we needed until we finally disconnected and continued to walk to my apartment. We didn't say another word.
Avi: "Mitch?"
Mitch: "Yeah, Chibi?"
Avi: "No talking until tomorrow."
Mitch: "Why?"
Avi: "I want to be the last thing on your lips until you wake up."
Avi: "Wait no."
Avi: "That was stupid."
Avi: "Hello??"
I was asleep.
