The smell of the breakfast Avi was making filled my entire apartment with the pungent fragrance of maple syrup and I couldn't even complain. The week I'd spent with him alone in my apartment was magical, though most of it was sex after I spent a long day at work. I carried my laptop into the dining room with me and went to check if my final grades had been posted.
"Morning, Mochi."
"Morning, Chibi. Whatcha makin?"
Avi chirped in laughter. "Eggs, bacon, pancakes... Nothing special."
"If it's anything like your cake, it'll be amazing."
"Ugly?"
"I said your cake, not you."
"You can starve."
We both laughed before Avi sat my plate down in front of me and left a light kiss on my temple. The page holding my grades loaded as I took a bite of Avi's perfect pancakes. I avoided looking at the screen until I was almost done with my food, which didn't take long since everything tasted so good! I bit a little bit off my last piece of bacon and took a look at my grades.
I aced Music History, Theatre, Choir, English, Japanese, and Chemistry, but ended up with a C in Calculus. My stomach churned at the sight of that C on my marks. I covered my mouth and turned away. How could I have a C? I worked so hard! I studied my ass off! I covered my head with my hands and rested my forehead against the table.
"Mitch? Are you okay?"
"I got a C..."
"That's... good?"
"No it's not good!" I stood up and paced around the room, crossing between the tiles of the kitchen/dining room area and the hard wood of the living room. "How...? I studied everything! I know the periodic table backwards!"
"Mitch, calm down."
"I can't calm down! I've never gotten a B. How the fuck am I supposed to explain a C to my parents?" I was starting to sweat. I could feel the blood rushing to my face as my fists clenched. "I'm so fucking stupid!"
"Mitch! It was just one grade. It's not the end of the world."
"Do you know how hard I worked for that test?!"
"Yes. I know you over worked yourself and would have crashed if I didn't force you to sleep."
"I could have been studying!"
Avi folded his arms and furrowed his eyebrows. "Are... Are you blaming me for you C?"
"You're the only thing that's changed, so-"
He shook his head and laughed. "Since when had skipping days of sleep ever lead to anything good?"
"Every other semester of college I've been in!"
"That's not something to be proud of!"
I stood in front of Avi and poked his chest as I spoke. "The amount of time I could have been studying when I was on dates with you..."
"That doesn't matter since I didn't see you outside of your room for the last month and a half. You were studying remember?"
"I knew I should have taken summer classes..."
"Are you saying you wish you never met me?"
"I'm saying I wouldn't have a C if I didn't meet you!"
"Oh! I'm so fucking sorry that my caring for your health got you a C! Is that what you want to hear?"
"What I want is an A!"
"You don't need one! You're being one right now!"
I had never so badly wanted to hit someone before that moment. "Leave!"
"I can't believe this."
"Get out!" I pushed his coat against his chest and shoved him towards the door.
"If I leave, I'm not coming back."
"Good! Bye!"
Briefly, there was a desolate look on his face before he pulled on his coat and left without another word. I stomped around my apartment for a while until I exhausted myself and had to sit down. I stayed on the couch for most of the rest of the day, waiting for Avi to come knocking on my door to apologize. It wasn't until 1 am that I realized he really wasn't coming back. Did we... break up?
