2Yeon: Perception [Slow Updates]

Their server was clumsily pushing a cart through the door with their desserts on top. When he reached their table, he apologized profusely for the racket, quickly placed their plate of desserts in front of them, and bowed deeply to apologize again before hightailing out of the room in embarrassment.

Jeongyeon and Nayeon glanced at each other before letting out a laugh at the scene.

"What the hell was that?" Nayeon asked, still giggling. 

Jeongyeon shrugged but she knew both of them hoped he didn't see anything when he stumbled in like that. She gestured for Nayeon to take a seat while she went back to her seat that she didn't bother putting back to the other side of the table. They set to eating and feeding each other with their desserts in silence but they were also sharing glances and secretive smiles. 

Although they made out, Jeongyeon was nervous to ask what it meant. Did Nayeon like her back or was the kiss just from the heat of the moment? Jeongyeon found courage to ask her, "What did that kiss mean, unnie?" When Nayeon didn't reply, she continued, "It could just be me but there has been sort of... tension between us these past few days. You can't tell me you've forgotten how we almost kissed during karaoke night or how we've been touchy-feely with each other throughout the whole week. I'm sure you've also noticed I don't turn away your advances as much and even initiate it sometimes."

Nayeon sighed. "Jeong... it's complicated."

"How is it complicated?" Jeongyeon asked. "If you didn't feel anything for me, you would've pushed me away when you had the chance. You wouldn't have kissed me back."

Nayeon grabbed her hand and looked straight into her eyes. "I'm just not ready for a relationship yet."

Jeongyeon was beginning to feel frustrated. "Unnie, I'm not asking you to get into a relationship with me. That's not the reason why I confessed. All I'm asking is for you to acknowledge and accept my feelings. If you're not ready for a relationship yet then I can wait." She had been waiting for years but she can wait longer if it was clear she had a chance.

The older girl shook her head. "That's not fair to you. I can't ask you to wait for me when I'm not sure if I will ever be ready for a relationship."

"But..." Jeongyeon trailed off as she sat back in her seat, looking defeated. Her mind was in shambles, her thoughts in disarray as if millions of them were going through her head all at once. Nayeon's rejection didn't make anything seem clearer and only left her feeling more confused than ever. If Nayeon didn't feel anything for her, why did she kiss her back? It could've been the heat of the moment but somehow, Jeongyeon didn't believe it was. Nayeon is usually clear-headed and isn't easily persuadable. She could've rejected the kiss or just sit there but she returned it without hesitation.

Nayeon hadn't let go of Jeongyeon's hand the whole time she was thinking. With the warmth from Nayeon's hand, she found a little comfort and cooled down after a while. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees as she stared right into Nayeon's eyes. At the moment, there was only one thing she wanted to know. "Tell me this at least, unnie. Do I have a chance?"

Nayeon looked down to avoid her eyes. "Jeong..." she said in a broken voice, like she was close to crying.

Jeongyeon placed a finger under her chin and had her look up. "Please, unnie. That's all I want to know for now. After this, I promise I won't bring it up again until you're ready."

They stayed in that position and held each other's gaze in silence. Jeongyeon waited for her answer with bated breath. She was wearing her heart on her sleeve right now. Nayeon may have sensed it which was why she hadn't said anything yet. Jeongyeon feared for her rejection but she knew she wouldn't be able to sleep if it was still unclear whether or not she had a chance.
