Autism:

Autism, also called autism spectrum disorder is a condition that has a wide range of symptoms and skills, that generally affects communication and behaviour. There's some debate on whether to call it a disorder or not, but let us just say this: it is not necessarily a handicap, and when the word disorder is used for this, it should not be used in a derogative manner or in a negative way.

Symptoms for autism can differ greatly. Some of the more common ones are:

- A narrow range of interests or intense interest in certain topics

- Doing something over and over, like repeating words or phrases, rocking back and forth, or flipping a lever

- High sensitivity to sounds, touches, smells, or sights that seem ordinary to other people

- Not looking at or listening to other people

- Problems understanding or using speech, gestures, facial expressions, or tone of voice

- Talking in a sing-song, flat, or robotic voice

- Trouble adapting to changes in routine.

Some people can display symptoms from birth, but most people generally get them by the time they're 3.

On the autism spectrum are 4 branches. Three of these 4 are:

Autistic disorder: this is what people generally think autism only is. It's when people have trouble communicating or with social interaction.

Childhood disintegrative disorder: These children have typical development for at least 2 years and then lose some or most of their communication and social skills.

Pervasive developmental disorder (PDD or atypical autism): This term might be used if a child has some autistic behavior, like delays in social and communications skills, but doesn't fit into another category.

There is no clarity as to what causes autism, but there is talk about genetic predisposition as well as what a mother eats/takes when she is pregnant.
