He was staring again.

He didn't mean to, but she was captivating.

Uzume Kirika was truly ethereal.

Her long, flowing, brown hair billowed over her shoulder as she moved the loose strands away from her face, two mini waterfall braids decorating the sides of her hair, secured with two little white bows. The sun captured the side of her face making her skin glow, whilst the light from the window made her chestnut brown eyes look like deep pools of honey.

Sakusa just couldn't seem to tear his eyes away.

He was snapped out of his stupor by their math teacher calling his name.

"--kusa! sakusa!" Mr Suzuki shouted exasperatedly. Sakusa wondered how long he'd been zoned out.

"I'm sorry, could you repeat the question?" sakusa coughed awkwardly, tearing his eyes away from the girl on the other side of the classroom and turning towards the teacher.

"Maybe if you weren't too busy ogling you'd have heard it the first two times." Mr Suzuki reprimanded passive-aggressively with a roll of his eyes.

sakusa cringed at the word 'ogling'. he couldn't tell if it was used to describe lovesick teens or perverts.

"Can you come to the front and complete the equation on the board?" the teacher continued, motioning towards the algebraic equation scribbled on the interactive whiteboard that decorated the wall, the projector flickering with old age.

Sakusa let out an inaudible sigh and got to his feet with one last glance at the notes on his page, praying he wouldn't embarrass himself further. If his cousin had been in the same class as him he'd surely been made fun of.

He finished the equation quickly, desperate to go back to his seat. he looked to the teacher for approval, feeling triumphant when mr suzuki nodded, confirming that his answer was correct.

He caught Kirika's eye as he walked back, suddenly thankful for the white mask covering the lower half of his face, though his ears burned an angry red.

God, this past 5 minutes had hurt his pride.

It was funny how simple eye contact from her could turn him into a blushing mess.

Sakusa huffed in annoyance as he stalked through the hallways of Itachiyama in search of his troublesome cousin.

It may have seemed pitiful to others who knew that his only friend was his cousin, but Sakusa preferred it this way. it meant he didn't have to deal with unnecessary interactions with others.

He'd managed to trudge into the school courtyard when he caught the end of a conversation. One of the voices was very familiar, the voice of the girl he had a crush on since his first year.

Of course, he knew that Uzume Kirika was popular with girls and boys alike, receiving countless confessions a week, but this guy didn't seem like he was backing down, and he seemed like he was getting angry at the rejection.

"I'm sorry but I don't return your feelings..." Kirika said for maybe the sixth time in this conversation.

"That's not a good enough reason to reject me Uzume! just give me a chance!" The boy started to raise his voice desperately, his face turning red.

sakusa scoffed, pushing off the wall he was resting on and turning the corner where the whole ordeal was happening. His scowl only deepened when he saw the troubled furrow of Kirika's brow.

"God, you reek of desperation," sakusa drawled as he approached, the boy who was already red from the rejection turned a few shades darker with anger.

"stay out of it, this isn't any of your business, clean freak." The boy seethed.

Contrary to popular belief, Sakusa was not a clean freak, nor was he scared of germs. He supposed he was some sort of a germaphobe, but he just didn't like dirty things and he also didn't like people touching him unless he knew them well enough.

"You're harassing my girlfriend, I think it is my business." Sakusa spat back, his dark eyes practically piercing through the boy's soul as he glared down at him.

Shit.

'why did I say that?' He thought, the regret sinking in almost instantly.

"C'mon, he clearly doesn't understand that when someone says 'no', it means 'no'." Sakusa lightly wrapped his fingers around her wrist, pulling her along with him.

They made it a safe distance away before Sakusa finally let go, now unable to make eye contact with the girl looking up at him curiously.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that. I didn't know how else to get him away from you." Sakusa said flatly, scratching his neck in embarrassment.

"No! It's okay, really. Thank you for helping me," Kirika smiled. "You're Sakusa, right? We're in the same class."

"Yeah..."

"Let's be friends from now on. Since you're my boyfriend, we ought to speak once in a while." Kirika teased.

Sakusa flushed, ever grateful to the white mask that hid his face. He nodded and they made their way back to class together, completely forgetting that he was supposed to be looking for Komori.

Little did they know, the boy from before would spread the word that Itachiyama's sweetheart was dating the ace of the volleyball team, forcing them to act out their little white lie.
