Isaac Collins POV
1:35 pm
"Bye, Rowan. It was nice to see you again," Miles said with a smirk, winking as he walked away. It was creepy, but sadly not unusual for him. His associates followed closely behind, leaving. I shrugged off my suit jacket and tossed it onto one of my couches, loosening my tie as I began to speak.
"Rowan, I need you to make some calls and—" I stopped mid-sentence. Usually, by now, she'd have responded with her usual, "Yes, sir," or something similar. But this time—nothing. I turned around and noticed her standing there, gripping her laptop as if it were a lifeline, her knuckles stark white against the plastic. Her gaze was glued to the carpeted floor, and she was shaking, trembling so badly it looked like she might collapse.
"Rowan? Are you okay?" I asked, my voice low, but she didn't respond. And then, without warning, she fell to her knees. I rushed over, kneeling beside her without thinking. My suit pants and dress shoes were creased, but surprisingly I didn't care. Not at that moment. All that mattered was whether Rowan was okay.
"Rowan, what happened?" I asked, trying to keep my voice calm. She started to cry, the kind of soft, broken weeping that made my heart ache for her. It was like she carried this quiet, unbearable pain. I reached out to touch her arm, hoping to comfort her, but the second my hand made contact, she winced. Confused, I hesitated, then curiosity got the better of me. I gently pulled back the sleeves of her dress, revealing her arms.
"Jesus... Who did this?" I stopped mid-sentence, but it didn't take long for me to realize. It was obvious. Miles.
Rowan struggled to speak, her voice shaky and broken. "I'm sorry, I didn't want to mess up your deal." She looked up at me, those big brown eyes brimming with tears, and I couldn't help myself. I wrapped her in one of the biggest hugs I've ever given anyone. She cried into my arms.
"You dumb ass, I do care about the deal." I said looking down at the angry looking burses on her body.
"When did he do this?"
"We were at the club... Miles came out of nowhere when I was in the bathroom. He tried... he..." She couldn't finish, but I didn't need her to. My grip on her tightened, my heart pounding with a mixture of anger and protectiveness.
"I won't let him hurt you again," I whispered, holding her close, letting she sweet powdery sent fill my nose.
"Rowan, maybe you should go back home for the day." I said gently, glancing down at her. Her head immediately lifted from my chest, eyes wide in surprise.
"But I have so much to do. I've got calls, planning—" she began, but I cut her off by standing up. She blinked at me, confusion all over her face.
"What are you—?"
Before she could finish her sentence, I walked over to my desk and pressed the button for the front desk.
"Hello, sir. How can I help you?" Came the voice on the other end.
