The morning light beamed brightly across the city, revealing every structure in its path. The heat drained the moisture from my lips. Turning around, I lay down for a few minutes until it was time to get Y/N ready for school. Today I'm far too busy to attend.
I went to Y/N's room after getting ready. "You got 20 minutes to get ready so I can walk you" I said, firmly knocking on the door. When I didn't get an answer I opened the door to find her scrambling across the room. Clothes were all over the place, as were hair products and stuffed animals. What the hell?
"I'M GOING TO HAVE A PANIC ATTACKKK" she whined falling onto the messy floor.
"What's the matter with you?" I sat next to her.
"I wanted to dress up for my crush, but I can't decide what to wear or do with my hair," she hid her face behind her hands.
She's in third grade; why is she concerned about her crushes' opinions on a Valentine's Day outfit? Especially if they aren't dating. That isn't to say they should be. But hearing this from her made me almost smile. She's growing up.
"I'll do your hair if you hurry and clean this junk of a mess. But you can choose the outfit."
"DEAL!" she exclaimed as she sat up. She held out her pinky finger for me to grab onto.
"Yeah, yeah, well you only have 18 minutes or less now, so hurry up," I said as I slid my pinky onto hers and made my leave.
When I returned, the room had been mostly cleaned. I sat her down in the bathroom with only 5 minutes left. Unfortunately, she's indecisive, so I settled on the simplest option: space buns.
"Hey Kenny?" she
"What?" I finished the first bun.
"I think ima confess to him today," please don't ask for advice. I'm not the best at it.
"Oh really?" I began working on the second bun.
"Mhm, you asked your girlfriend out; how do you think I should do it?" I looked at her in the mirror before returning my focus to the artwork in front of me.
"Do whatever makes you comfortable and feels memorable. There's honestly no right or wrong way to do it" I finished the bun and pulled out hair in the front.
She twirled in the mirror before giving me a hug. "Thanks Kenny!" I hugged her back. I dropped her off at school and started marking off my plans for the day. Meeting up with Mikey was one of them.

I walked up the path, expecting Y/N to come out of school and give me her signature squeezing hug. Mikey and Emma were standing by my side. For, me, Emma, and Y/N, were going on a date afterwards. Mikey wasn't even supposed to be here, but he wouldn't leave us alone.
I made my way through the crowd of students to her after spotting a familiar pair of space buns in the distance. With a frown on her face, she lowered her head. Her backpack was dragged across the concrete.
"Hey, what's going on?" I knelt in front of her, searching for emotion in her eyes.
"He, you know, rejec- rejected me. I'm not going to talk about it." She stuttered as she tried to push past me.
I stopped her in her tracks, holding out my arm and pulling her back to the previous location. "Well guess what? I'm going to take you out today, okay? It's just me and you, so come on with your cute self." She made a smile at that.
I took her backpack and slung it over my shoulders. While Y/N avoided the cracks in the sidewalk, I asked Mikey to take Emma out for me because I wanted to spend the day with just my little sister.
That's exactly what I did. We got ice cream and are now sitting by a pond, admiring the glistening water and the ducks that swim in it. Aside from ice cream, I took her to my favorite cafe, where she had her first taste of mochi. I know I didn't do much today, but I hope she enjoyed it.
"Hey Ken?" She never calls me by my first name, so I turned to look at her, thinking something was wrong.
"I'm glad to have you as a big brother," she continued, placing her now empty ice cream cup on the ground. Leaning her head on my shoulder and pressing her body against my arm. As she was dozing off, I responded, "I'm glad you think so".
