"Excuse me...nurse? You can't be 'ere! 'Zis patient is about to go into surgery!"
"And I've got a chart that tells me there's a last minute OR change for a VIP - are you going to tell me I can't follow my orders to transfer?"
"Oh, my apologies, let me see...ah, 'zis is a prioity transfer, non? 'Zat is strange, we were not made aware of a priority VIP."
"Neither were we until less than twenty minutes ago, doctor. Is she stable for transport?"
"Yes, to OR...4?"
"Correct. Can you please inform Dr. Carrill and the rest of his team?"
"Bien sûr. 'Zey will need to restart 'ze scrub-in process in 'ze new OR. I will have our anesthesiologist report right away for maintenance until 'zey arrive."
"Thank you, Dr...Deschamps?"
"Oui."
Distant voices echo around what feels like empty spaces in your head as bright lights flash, and long rectangular white spaces roll by. Everything is fuzzy, and suddenly there's a face you don't recognize hovering above you. You can't quite make her out. Everything blurs together. But you can hear her.
"Don't worry, we've got you," she whispers. "We'll get you out of here."
You try to speak, and while questions bubble up to your mind nothing comes out of your mouth as those long rectangles roll past. Dings and beeps and sharp alarms from nearby sound familiar, but you can't place them.
"Almost there," the woman whispers again, her voice soothing. Calm.
Suddenly the rectangles disappear and the lights go out. More dings as the room darkens. Your pulse quickens and you try to move, but a gentle hand stills your body, resting lightly on your chest.
"Sweetheart?"
A man's voice. One you recognize.
"Hi baby. I got her," the woman's voice says.
"I'm so proud of you," the man says. "Any problems?"
"Just a doctor wondering why I was there. He was almost as big as you!"
The man laughs and the woman's comforting hand disappears.
"I hadn't expected them to have already started prepping her," the woman says. "But she's okay. You don't have long though. You should get out of here."
You try to speak. To figure out what the hell is going on. You again try to sit, but that gentle hand is back and finds its way to your forehead, calming you instantly.
"She's agitated," the woman says. "She's probably in pain. Did you get what you need?"
"Yeah," the man says. "I'll get her hooked up once we get to the tunnels."
"And the men outside?"
"Sam's taking care of them. He just radioed. I guess Buck's out there somewhere too. He found two of them already...well...,"
The voices fall silent for a while, until a few dings break the quiet and suddenly the light is back. It hurts your head and a whimper escapes your lips. The woman's hand gives you one more gentle and reassuring pat on the forehead.
"Be careful baby, I love you," she says to the man. "And...bring him back, okay? He's in there somewhere."
"I love you too, sweetheart," the man says. "Take the car. Drive straight to Sam's. He'll be right behind you."
The light gets brighter as that soothing touch on your forehead disappears.
"You're gonna get tired," the man's voice says as you feel a sharp pain in your arm. "But I've got you."
