Chicks and Ducks {Chapter Two}
All of the interns were sitting around the table. Some were uncomfortably shifting around and others were frozen still. By fear or other emotions.
"Welcome to Seattle Grace," The chief said with a small smile and you could tell he was getting ready for a large speech which I would listen intently too.
"Each of you today comes in hopeful, wanting in on the game," He started off and was getting ready for the big and heavy part of the speech.
"A month ago you were in med school being taught by the doctors. Now you are the doctors," My eyes widen and my nerves start kicking in.
"The next five years you spend here as surgical residents will be the best and worse, years of your lives," He says making eye contact with everyone.
He takes a breath and keeps going, "You will be pushed to the breaking point. Look around you. Say hello to your competition." As he says that everyone turns to stare at one another and I put in a cocky brave face.
"Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty. Five of you will crack under the pressure. Two of you will be asked to leave." He says calmly as we all look around in shock.
"This is your starting line. This is your arena. How well you play, that's up to you," He finishes and we are left in awe at his words.
I look up into the gallery and see some of the older attendings and residents watching. After looking at them all I faced back to the front only then noticing I was the last intern in the room. Quickly, I scurried out of the room towards the locker area. I made my way through the hall until I found a room with multiple lockers, benches, mirrors and sinks, and a few showers as well.
We all split up and found our locker numbers and residents on the board. Locker 16, Dr. Bailey. Looking through the first one I couldn't find it but then I found my locker next to a woman with dirty blonde hair and kind eyes.
"Meredith Grey, nice to meet you," she said with a smile holding out her hand for me to shake. I grasped it and shook it as I told her my name.
"James, Carolina James." I said smiling and then turning back to my locker to put on my scrubs. They were light blue and I had a lab coat over them. I threw my hair up and was ready to go.
I waited for everyone else to get ready and soon they were. Everyone who had the 'Nazi' was nervously heading towards the lobby of the hospital. I wasn't quite sure what to expect. In my mind I was picturing a big, German man with piercings. Boy was I wrong.
She was a petite African-American woman. But by one look at her you could tell, she was all business. As we approached her one of the other interns stuck her hand out and smiled.
"I'm Isobel Stevens, but most people call me Izzy." The nazi looked at her hand and then up towards her face with a look of disgust.
"Don't bother sucking up I hate you already." She says as she walks down the hallway.
"I have five rules which you will come to know by heart." She says and then states four of them as her pager starts to beep.
"Rule five. When I run. You run." She says sprinting down the hall to find a young girl having a seizure.
"Izzy fix the IV. Grey keep her steady. O'Malley insert the sedative." She yells as George can't do it. I run over, grab it and insert it carefully into her back. She calms down from the seizure and is left laying there as the nurses take over.
"Nice work James, O'Malley you were lucky she was there." She says sighing as she walks down the hallway.
All of us following her like little chicks and ducks.
