Sweetest Shark {Chapter 3}
[remember I will be changing some parts of the plot line but keeping some parts as well :-) ]
She turned towards us and assigned us patients or jobs to do to start off our first shift. I nervously cracked my neck and fiddled with the bottom of scrub shirt.
"O'Malley and Yang go down into the ER and so sutures," she says pointing to the elevators as they scurried off.
"James and Grey you two will be doing post-ops on Dr.Shepard and Dr.Burke," She says and we nod, both of us getting paged to the nurses desk on floor 4. As we are walking away I hear Dr. Bailey say,
"Izzie, how could I forget? You will be doing rectal exams." She chuckles with laughter leaving the disgusted Stevens behind.
We jog up the stairs and get to floor four in a short amount of time. Approaching the nurses desk I see, an African-American man with glasses arguing with another man with gorgeous hair. Once they see us they both cease talking immediately and turned towards us, forcing smiles.
"Welcome to Seattle Grace, I am Doctor Burke and this is Doctor Shepard," he says nodding back towards the other man. When he says this I can feel Meredith slightly tense up. I turn towards her and look. Her eyes are looking every where but me, and Doctor Shepard.
I clear my throat slightly and look up to Dr.Burke. "So who do we go to?"
"Shepard which intern do you want to run your post-ops?" He asks and he pointed at Meredith and I heard her secretly groan. She follows him down the hallway, leaving me behind with Dr.Burke.
Smiling he nods towards me, "Name?"
"James, Carolina James," I reply repeating my greeting from earlier this morning when I met Meredith.
"So, you will be dealing with my post operations and running basic tests, inserting I.V's and other things. There are only a few we have to do so I will watch and assist if needed. If you do well then I will most likely ask for you again," He says all in one breath.
I nod and try to remember what he said, "Yes sir."
He pulled out a stack of charts from behind the nurses desk. He dropped them in my hands and starting walking down the hallway, grabbing the top one.
"This patient is very near and dear to my heart," Doctor Burke starts as we enter into the patients room. I put the stack of charts on the floor and take the patients from his hands.
"Female, age thirty-four, recently had a heart transplant after being on the list for- wow-, sorry, three years," I finish reading the basics and then check on the different tests.
"BP seems fine," I say looking at the chart.
"No elevated blood counts," I say my eyebrows furrowing looking at another column in the chart, "She does look a bit dehydrated," I notice and Dr.Burke nods with a smirk on his face.
"Looks like someone has to do an I.V then," he says with a chuckle. I feel my eyes go wide but I smile confidently.
"Of course," I answer putting rubber gloves on.
I pulled out all the supplies needed and set up the tubing, briefly explaining what I was about to do.
Steadily, I grabbed her arm and flipped it so the underside was showing. After a quick search, I found a prominent vein and started to sterilize it. After doing this I inserted the needle, careful to have steady hands. I connected the tubing and took out the needle. When I was finished taping down the I.V down I realized what I had just done.
I had successfully inserted my first I.V, on my first try. Taking a deep breath I closed my eyes and shakily breathed out. My mind was racing on things I could've messed up. Doctor Burke broke the silence first.
"Well Dr.James that was very well done for your first try," He said with a slight grin as he handed me the stack of charts and we went along to go over multiple more patients.
***an hour or two later currently 7 hours into the shift***
Setting my tray on the table where the rest of my intern team was. Meredith sat down arounf the sam e time I did. Sitting down I hear hushed tones and murmurs dying down. Frowning I ignored it. O'Malley sat next to me.
"Sorry about earlier, and thanks for stepping up. I honestly think-" I cut him off.
"It's fine, we are all interns. I'm sure you would have done the same for me," I say with a smile and his whole face turns red.
I smirk and turn back towards the conversation where Izzy is complaining about having to do rectal exams for the last 7 hours.
"I did three successful I.Vs and watched a chest tube be inserted. Also a couple sutures," I say and everyone looks at me with a wide open mouth.
Smiling I pat George's shoulder and stand up.
"Let's go see what else I can help with," I smile and walk away hearing the quiet words of Cristina,
"She's the sweetest shark I have ever met,"
This chapter was really long for me so I might not do another one for at least a couple days but please vote and comment who you ship her with or might ship her with so I have some ideas
