After the shift was over and I had changed back into my clothes, I realized how bad I needed a drink.
"Hey, do you guys want to go to Joe's Bar?" I asked all the interns, flashing a hopeful smile.
George's face lit up, "Yes," He said a bit too quickly, "Yeah-Yeah, I'll go."
I smirked and looked towards Mer and Cristina. Both of them shrugged and nodded a yes. Across the room Alex looked up with a teasing grin.
"Wouldn't miss it," He called out. I rolled my eyes, walking out with Izzy towards my car.
"Hey Dr.James, wait!" I heard a voice call out.
Spinning around, I saw Dr.Shepard. "Yes sir?" I asked.
His eyes lit up as he smiled, a little out of breath from running after me. "The surgery went really well, you should've been there," He said, raising his eyebrows a little to make a point.
I just cracked a smile, "It's fine, there will always be other surgeries. But you're right, I did deserve it."
Dr.Shepard's lips went up a little on the edges, "That's not what I said," He laughed.
Shrugging I replied, "But I know that's what you meant," I said with a grin, jogging to the car so we could get to the bar.
Soon we got to the bar and plopped down on a bar stool next to George and then Alex sat down next to me.
"Mer, shots?" I asked, gesturing towards the tequila bottle.
She laughed, "I'm always down for tequila."
I ordered a round of shots, and quickly drained it. After a few more shots, I turned to Alex feeling a bit tipsy.
"Guess what?" I said, not wanting an actual answer.
He took a sip of his beer, "What?" He replied, knowing I was a little drunk.
"You're a bit of an ass, y'know," I said, just getting started. "You act like a tough guy but you're really just annoying, and based on my psychology rotation, you probably have like actual problems."
Alex took another sip and smiled, "You done?"
I shrugged, "Yeah I think so."
He just shook his head, "You're freaking crazy."
Laughing, I turned the other way and faced George. "I want to play darts and then go study so I can beat all of the other interns," I said, "You coming?"
Quickly, he jumped up and followed me towards the dart board.
"I'm so good at darts, so prepare to lose," I teased. He didn't say anything, just threw a dart at the board, hitting near to the middle.
"Wow, O'Malley, not bad," I started, "Tell me about yourself, because I know nothing about you."
He just shrugged, hitting a bulls eye. "I'm boring," He said.
I threw a dart, landing right to the left of his, "I'm sure you aren't that boring."
"Born and raised in your usual mid-west family and this is the farthest I have ever been from home," He laughed, "I'm just George."
"Hey, George's can be pretty cool!" I said being defensive about himself.
"Whatever," He said, throwing his last dart and beating me.
I threw my hands up, "No way! Recount. I never lose," I shouted in shock.
"You just did."
--------------------------------------------
The next morning, fortunately my hangover wan't that bad. I drank a huge glass of water and quickly got ready before speeding into the hospital parking lot. Hopping out of the car, I raced into the interns lounge, throwing on my scrubs and waiting for my resident assignment.
The last few interns trickled in as the assignments were put up on the board.
"Yes!" I shouted, "Peds!"
Alex rolled his eyes as far as he could into his head, "Great. Peds.."
"Sorry, Karev is it?" The peds attending asked, flipping her blonde hair. "I'm gonna need a lot more excitement unless you want to be on scut all day," She said with a cheery smile.
He lifted a fist in fake excitement, "I meant, Great, Peds!"
I snorted slightly, following him through the halls. We walked up and down the hallways, going to the Peds floor.
"I'm gonna totally crush you today," I muttered.
He frowned at me, "Crush me in what?" He asked.
"Everything," I teased, "But mostly this whole Peds thing," I said, pushing him back so I could get closer to Dr.Robbins and help her on the first case.
Alex whispered, "Oh we'll see about that," As he ran up next to me, shoving me slightly.
Getting pushed forward, I stumbled. Turning around, I shot him a glare.
"So, you two get to do my dirty work," She started, grabbing a stack of files and splitting them between us.
Dr.Robbins gave us a sad look, "You get to deliver the news of tests today, most of them bad. Take your time, this is one of the saddest things that happens in peds. When kids and their parents find out they don't have much time. Do your best and be kind," She said, starting to walk away.
Nervously, I looked up at Alex. "I'm scared. I'm really not good at this stuff," I said as we started walking over to room 359.
He rolled his eyes, "How hard can it be?"
I frowned slightly at his insensitive reply as we entered the room. There was a little boy sitting on the bed, with big blue eyes and race car pajamas.
"Shit," Alex muttered.
I pulled up a chair and sat down next to his bed and Alex stood by the door.
"So, I have the results of your tests and fortunately they were better than we expected, but still not that great," I said, mostly talking to the parents first.
The mother clutched her husband's hand, knuckles turning white. "How long?" She asked tears filling her eyes.
"Around three weeks, six at most," I said solemnly. The mother broke down in tears, sobbing as she cried into her husbands chest.
I turned back to Grant, "Hey Grant," I smiled.
He grinned right back, "Hello!"
"You haven't been feeling too good lately right?" I asked, looking at his bloodshot eyes.
His eyes welled up with tears, "I don't feel good anymore, I'm so tired and I know my mommy is sad but I just want to go," He said, leaning back.
"It's all gonna be okay soon," I said, "Just hold out for a little longer and try to make your mommy happy," I said quietly, standing up to leave.
Turning back towards the parents, Alex called out to the parents, "Any questions, page Dr.Robbins or any nurses," He said. The two of us walked out of the room.
I quickly rounded the corner and leaned against the wall, tears slipping out of my eyes. Wiping them with the back of my hand, I sniffed, "Really Karev, don't tell anyone about this."
"I won't," He said quietly, with a half-smile as we headed into the next patients room.
He whispered to himself, "I'm not that big of an ass."
