This is the story of the third Kira. Hotaru Yagami.

"Now can anyone tell me what this sentence says in English?" The professor asks to my classmates. I don't pay attention as my brother Light answers the question. I've always been kind of a loner. Why bother paying attention in class if I already know what we're learning? I started English lessons in elementary school, I know what a simple sentence says. Sometimes I wish my professor would just drop dead. Obviously I wouldn't murder him or anything, I'd never get away with it. The bell suddenly rings, bringing me back from my thoughts. I gather all of my stuff and head out the door. Finally, the end of the day. The hallways are very busy, everyone getting ready to head home. I grab my backpack out of my locker and walk out of the school. Looking around, I see something odd in a tree nearby. It looks like some sort of book. I walk over to the tree and set my backpack up against it.

"Probably someone's textbook." I whisper to myself. The tree has a lot of easy climbing branches so it makes it easy to grab the book. As I make my way back down the tree, I look at the cover, Death Note. Huh, sounds like the name of a horror book. When I reach the ground, I sit down and look through it. It's completely empty. I flip back to the front and spot a black page with white lettering.

How to use it:

The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
If the cause of death is written within the next 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.
If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.
After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

I personally believe in the supernatural but this is still a stretch. I guess it's like if you believe in god and then someone dressing up as Jesus suddenly tells you that they're the real god, you wouldn't believe it. Despite the fact that this notebook is probably fake, I decide to slip it into my backpack anyway. Putting my backpack back on, I start heading home.

Halfway there, I start thinking about the notebook again. I wonder if it really works, should I test it out? But say it does work, would that make me a murderer? Probably. Maybe it wouldn't though, I wouldn't be killing them directly or anything. I shake the thought out of my mind and continue walking home. I pass by a convenience store and decide to stop in and buy a comic. As I start paying, my mind wanders back to the Death Note again. I could probably use it to kill my professor, if it even works that is. I thank the cashier and put the comic in my backpack, leaving the store. When I walk outside, it starts raining, great. I put my backpack over my head and start running home.

It's pouring rain when I reach my front door. I quickly open it up and run inside.

"I'm home!!" I yell as I close the door behind me. My mom comes out of the living room and greets me with a hug.

"Welcome home sweetie, how was school?" She parts from the hug and looks at me kindly.

"Eh, nothing too interesting. I had to sit through a bunch of boring classes though, learning stuff I already know." It's probably better if I don't let her know about the Death Note in case it actually does work.

"Well, I'm glad it wasn't a bad day at least, your father's working late tonight so you'll probably be asleep before he gets home." She pats me on the head and I head upstairs. I can see Light's room light on through the crack in his door. He's probably busy studying, so I won't bother him. When I walk into my room, the light's still on. It looks more clean than it was when I left, mom probably came in and cleaned it. I'll have to thank her tomorrow. I set my backpack next to my desk and unzip it, taking out the Death Note. It doesn't look like anyone has written in it yet. Looking over the rules, I think I know how I'll test it. I grab a pencil from my pencil cup and flip to the first page.

Haruki Tanaka

There. I wrote his name. He should die of a heart attack in 40 seconds. I guess if he doesn't show up at school tomorrow I'll know if it worked. Maybe they'll even tell us that he died and isn't coming back to school. That seems a bit harsh though, maybe I should test it on someone else while I wait for tomorrow. I turn on a mini TV I have in my room, it was a present from when I first got into high school. Flipping to a news channel, I see that there's a police car chase going on. The person had apparently just robbed a store and was trying to get away. His name is Hideo Ishikawa, and they're showing his face in the corner of the screen. Perfect. I ready my pencil on the line below where I wrote my teacher's name. Once I have the criminal's face clear in my mind, I write down his name.

Hideo Ishikawa, car crashes into a pole during a police chase, dies as the car makes contact with the pole.

Okay, 39 seconds to go. My eyes focus on his car as it speeds across the road. I check my watch, 20 more seconds. 15 more seconds. 5 more seconds. Just as I count the last second, his car swerves to the side of the road and hits a metal pole. The newscaster points down from the helicopter he's in at the car. My eyes widen as the police cars stop and the officers rush to the car. They back away and stare at the car. The newscaster shouts something to the helicopter driver and they land. The cameraman runs up to the car, next to the police. The man is lying over the steering wheel, dead. My eyes widen and I turn off the television. I- I killed him, didn't I? Holy shit. This notebook... is real.

"Light, Hotaru! It's almost 6:30, you two should get ready to go to the prep course!" Mom shouts from downstairs. I peek out from my room to shout okay back, Light does the same thing. Should I take the Death Note with me? Nah, it's probably better if I leave it here. I open my desk drawer and slip it inside. Then I put on my shoes and head out with Light.

Once we finish, we walk out together. I hear someone complaining about their mom. Ugh, I wish people would be more grateful sometimes. Light and I start making our way back home. We're about to pass a convenience store when I see some guys messing with a girl.

"I'm going to go buy something, you can go ahead and continue on home if you want." Light says nonchalantly as he walks into the store.

"Okay." I already bought a comic earlier so there isn't really a point in waiting for Light.

When I get home, I go straight to my room. It's kind of late, I should probably go to sleep.
