"Whaaaat? Does it have to be now?" Sayu complains to mom while eating her chips. I've been reading my new book all morning on the couch, the best way to start the new year.

"Your father's been pulling overnighters with no change of clothes so you're going to bring these to him". Mom says sternly. Light walks in and looks like he's about to say something but I speak first.

"I just finished a chapter in my book, how about I take them to him?" I set my book down and stand up. Mom smiles and Sayu perks up.

"Thanks Hotaru! I owe ya one next time!" She leans back on the couch and keeps eating her chips.

"You're welcome, I'll go get my shoes on then." As I pass Light, he gives me a side glance. I ignore him and head upstairs.

"So, are you gonna kill anyone at the task force?" Robo asks as I slip a page of the Death Note into my back pocket.

"No, but you can never be too safe." I slip on my shoes and head back downstairs with Robo. Mom hands me the bag of clothes and I head outside.

"Shouldn't you call your dad and tell him that you're bringing him a change of clothes?" Robo says from behind me.

"Oh yeah, good point." I take out my phone and call my dad. After a few rings, he still doesn't answer.

"Huh, I guess his cell isn't turned on." I put my phone away and keep walking.

As I make it through the front door of the task force headquarters, I see another person talking to the receptionist.

"I must speak directly to someone from the Task Force." She sounds urgent.

"I've told you already, there is no one at the Kira Task Force Headquarters." Huh, strange. No one's at headquarters and dad's phone is turned off?

"Can't you contact them somehow? I have information relating to the Kira investigation." She says hurriedly. The Kira investigation? This could be bad, I wonder who she is. It could be some kind of prank but she looks pretty serious.

"Look, I'll call headquarters one more time for you, hold on." The receptionist picks up the phone so I go over to the second one.

"Hello, I'm detective Soichiro Yagami's son, Hotaru Yagami. I brought this change of clothes for him but it doesn't seem like he's here, can I just leave them with you?" I set the bag of clothes down in front of him.

"Sure! Hey, I haven't seen you in a while, Hotaru." He takes the bag of clothes.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I don't quite remember you." I rub the back of my head in embarrassment.

"It's okay, I'm just the receptionist anyway. You helped solve the insurance fraud murder investigation with Light last year." He says happily. Light helped a lot with that, I really only did a few things.

"Oh yeah, that was a challenge. I just have to sign here right?" I point at the paper in front of him and he nods.

"So Hotaru, does this mean you're going to be helping us with the Kira investigation too?" He asks hopefully.

"Maybe. If all goes well, I might find Kira before L does." I don't really intend on catching Kira for L but this might make that woman trust me with whatever she was going to tell the task force.

"As I thought, there's no one at headquarters. You're going to have to trust me on this ma'am, I'll be sure to give them your message as soon as I see them, I promise." The other receptionist seems completely done with this person.

"That's not good enough, I have to tell them in person!" She says desperately.

"Excuse me, my father's actually in charge of the Kira investigation. If you like, I can pass your message onto him. His cell phone is off right now but it'll most likely be back on soon. A number of FBI agents were just killed and a lot of detectives have actually quit the case because they're afraid of Kira. So he's pretty busy right now." I shuffle a little in my spot as I tell her about the task force.

"Um, Hotaru? It's probably better if you don't discuss this with strangers." He whispers to me, it's not like whispering will make her not hear you. I look back at the woman happily when I respond to him.

"Hey, it's pretty much common knowledge at this point. Besides, I feel like I can trust her; you can see it in her eyes. She's a wise and careful person," I go from responding to the receptionist to talking to the woman herself, "you heard about what happened, and you must have figured out that the police had a leak of some kind. And that's why you wanted to tell them in person, well, am I right?" She smiles slightly and nods. We walk away from the receptionists after I wave to the one I talked to.

"I'm sure my father will call me back once he checks his messages, once he does, I'll let you talk to him." We reach the exit and pause.

"You sure that's all right?" She asks warmly.

"Yeah. You understand why I can't just give you my father's cell phone number but I have no problem letting you use my phone to talk to him. You'll have to trust my father and I, which I hope won't be too challenging." I smile sweetly and she chuckles a little.

"Thank you so much." She bows and Robo walks to stand next to me.

"She's not as wise as you said she was, that was a stupid move." Robo laughs. We walk outside and I start talking again.

"I have to say, you've got to be pretty brave to be getting involved in the Kira case like this." I wonder how brave she'd be if she could see Robo standing beside me right now.

"Not really." She replies modestly.

"So according to you, is Kira some-" what would Kira do in this situation? For a minute, I'll just pretend I'm the real Kira and play it how he would. Oh of course! I need her name. I cough a little and keep talking.

"Um... we've been talking and I just realized I don't even know your name. I'm Hotaru Yagami." Hopefully that didn't sound too out of the blue.

"My name's Shoko Maki, pretty simple huh?" She says, a little embarrassed.

"Of course not, I think it's a beautiful name." Perfect, now I have her name. I should probably talk to her for a bit before killing her. Just so I can know what she was going to tell the task force. Maybe I can guess it, it wouldn't be a far stretch.

"So Maki, I've been thinking about Kira's powers. I think they might somehow let him control people before they die." If she knew anything other than this, it might be better to kill her off sooner. We keep walking as she responds.

"So do I! It's odd that you say that because that's exactly what I've been thinking. Kira's able to control their actions before he kills them, but there's more to it. If my analysis so far is correct, Kira can kill in a number of ways. Not just with a heart attack." That's definitely more than I thought this girl would know. Who is she, a rip off L or something? If she gave the task force this information, it might help their investigation a little too much.

"I don't think anyone else knows this yet. But if the police are willing to consider it, I bet it would help them catch Kira." Think like Kira, just keep talking.

"You know, that possibility never even crossed my mind. So you're saying, anytime Kira wants one of his murders to go undetected, he'd use something other than a heart attack?" She's too smart for her own good.

"Right. I'm almost positive that someone I know may have met Kira." She says solemnly.

"Met Kira? If a person came in saying that they had met Kira, the police would be a bit more than skeptical." I wonder who Kira was, did they find out?

"I know. That's why I need to explain it in person to someone from task force headquarters. Otherwise, I'm afraid they'll just write me off." She sighs.

"Wouldn't it be better if your friend spoke to them instead?" I say this even though I'm pretty sure her so-called friend is dead. Kira would probably kill anyone who knew who he was, that is if they weren't trying to help him.

"It probably would but he's no longer alive. He was one of the 12 FBI agents who came to Japan to investigate Kira." She mumbles sorrowfully. An FBI agent? He could've been the one following me! He was probably following one other person, what if that person was Kira?

Woo! Lots of words this time, lots of words. Sorry if that was pretty similar to the anime, I had trouble mixing it around to be different.
