Your POV:

Today is a big day!

You thought joyfully, getting ready as you prepared for the things that could occur on your birthday.

Sure, another year of being older is not ideal, but it means I've spent another year with my dear Matthew!

The man went to work in the morning and was set to return mid-day.

You waited in the bedroom, your ears perking up as you heard the front door open and close. Jumping up with excitement, you head downstairs. "Mattie!" You exclaim happily and leap at him.

Already being prepared as his arms invited you into a warm hug. "Hey, maple." You two let go of each other, and Matthew scanned you up and down, seeing you dressed up. "Are you going somewhere?" He asked, removing his coat and hanging it up.

"Huh? O-oh, yeah..." You stuttered, wondering if he knew what day it was. "Just going to work for a bit..."

He titled his head. "Really? I thought it was your day off." Matthew sat down on the couch and waited for your response.

You made up an excuse on the spot. "Yes, but I remembered I have to sort out some orders for next week." You stayed silent for a moment. "Do you want to come with me?"

"I'd love to, but I'm going to get started on some things from work too. Pardon. (Sorry.)"

You wave your hand. "That's okay. I'll see you later then..."

You set the last box onto the pile in the corner of the backroom. You sat down on a spinning chair and sighed.

I know it's a day like any other, but I can't help but want more...

It wasn't an excuse when you told him you had things pending at the salon, but you got a head start on something that could have been easily taken care of a month later. But you couldn't handle the embarrassment of reminding Matthew about your birthday. A day you automatically assumed he'd remembered.

I don't blame him.

He's been busy too.

You got up, searched through various drawers, and noticed you had to order hair-related items as soon as possible. As you jot down a list, you hear the door to the backdoor open.

Did I forget to lock it?!

You panicked but fought through the rising fear and seized a nearby broom, positioning yourself to swing at the suspected intruder at full force if needed. Waiting around the corner and carefully listening as the footsteps approached, you stepped into the frame, lifting the broom until you saw the face of the 'intruder'. "Matthew?" You said, slowly lowering the 'weapon'.

"H-hey..." He gave you a crooked smile.

"You nearly gave me a heart attack!" You complained, taking a deep breath. "What are you doing here? I thought you couldn't come." Your eyes trailed down to his hands, seeing he was holding a gift basket you overlooked at first glance. You pointed to it. "What's that?"

Matthew handed you the basket and beamed softly. "Did you think I'd forget the day your existence gifted the world?"

You gasped as tears began forming in your eyes. "You remembered after all?"

He nodded. "Yes, I had to fake ignorance until I ensured that today's plans were ready and not to spoil the surprise."

You set the gift aside and pulled him into a hug. "Oh, Mattie..."

He gently hugged you back. "I'm sorry if anything I said or did came off as insensitive."

You let go and wiped your eyes. "It's okay, I understand." A grin replaced your lingering doubts. "Can I see what's in the basket?" You asked in a cutesy tone.

Matthew chuckled. "Bien sûr. (Of course.)"

You removed the tissue paper on top, and it revealed several gifts.

All-purpose combs of various colors, a long thin rectangular gift box accompanied by a teddy bear wearing a red knotted bow headwrap hugged a new pair of skates. "This is beautiful, Matthew!" You gushed, giving him a quick hug, and grabbed the box, curious about what was inside.

Opening it, uncovered a beautiful pair of rose gold swivel scissors.

"No, you did not!" You exclaimed, holding them up in the light, your reflection staring back at you through the genuine shiny material.

"I'm glad you like them." Matthew removed the headwrap from the bear and held up the skates. "I have one more surprise. Souhaitez-vous me rejoindre? (Care to join?)"

You nodded eagerly.

Matthew covered your eyes with his hands and led you carefully through what you could feel under your feet was soft snow. He removed his hands, bringing you into a hidden forest, displaying a frozen pond that was big enough for two people to skate on. "Don't worry. I made sure it was safe." Matthew said as he put on his skates. You followed his lead and stepped on the ice together. Your new skates were a significant upgrade from the ones you had.

Matthew took hold of both of your hands and guided you around the frozen water. The moon was a personal spotlight that shined on the two of you. When you got in closer range of him, he embraced you tightly. "Sorry again if I made you feel bad..."

"It's alright, Mattie." You said, pulling back and gazing up at him. "Thank you for everything you've done." You reached for his curl, twirled it around your finger, and grinned.

He blushed and took out the headwrap that he got you. Putting it on your head, got a good look at your features, and smiled. "Perfect as ever." Matthew then buried his face in the crook of your neck.

You giggled, beyond thankful for the best birthday by far.
