jisung looked up next to him at a short girl as a slight glow surrounded the two. chaewon let out a small gasp, surprised that it finally happened and stared at the boy in shock, her eyes meeting his unreadable expression.
"you're my soulmate," the girl muttered, causing jisung to scoff which surprised her.
"that's a bunch of bullshit," he replied shortly. jisung wanted to get up and leave, but something, the soulmate bond he guessed, was holding him back. the boy didn't react when the girl's face dropped, her mouth closing. he had obviously know that the other person would be saddened by his reaction but he was genuinely shocked when he saw a tear shine on chaewon's cheek in the dark.
"wow..." she breathed out, "of course this had to go bad. all these years and you just had to be an asshole." chaewon said this quietly, so jisung only heard parts of it. taking a deep breath, she turned to him and smiled, carefully wiping her tears with her sleeve.
"what's your name? i'm kang chaewon."
"why should i tell you?" realizing that if he stayed for longer it would be harder for him to leave, jisung stood up from the swing and started taking long strides away from the girl. after he was a few feet away, he heard the scraping of a bag being picked up and hurried steps behind him.
once she caught up to him, chaewon grabbed his sleeve, but jisung easily pushed her hand off. he continued walking at his regular pace, but the girl had to speed up to match his pace.
"dude, what's your problem? we're literally soulmates," chaewon said, a slight annoyance in her voice since the day of her dreams was ruined.
jisung abruptly stopped, making the girl following him trip on her steps. she looked up at him and he scowled under the mask he was wearing. "i don't care," was all he replied with before he started walking again.
"but-"
"we're not seeing each other again."
chaewon felt her heart drop. all of her worries for the past month had come true. her soulmate didn't like her. not one bit. in fact, he hated her. she had hoped, expected even, a person who would feel the same joy as her at the end of the countdown, but instead she was here holding back her tears in front of this stranger.
although she was disappointed, and honestly quite heartbroken she remembered everything her mother had told her about soulmates and took a deep, shaky breath, raising her eyes from the ground to the figure walking in front of her. "soulmates are meant to be" her mom had told her. "no matter what, you're fated together."
"wait!" chaewon exclaimed, but jisung ignored her and continued walking.
chaewon ran up in front of him, blocking his path and he could now see tears forming in her eyes under the dim street lights. although he refused to believe it, her sadness did make him feel a bit down-spirited and he only spared her a short glance before walking her short frame. she didn't try following him, but a few seconds later he could hear her soft sniffles.
