Felix
Damien and I are sitting on the floor. The lights were turned off a while ago. We haven't moved since. He has been on his phone, texting with Nora. She turned out to be doing fine. The woman at the desk was an old friend of hers.
Apparently, Nora is somewhere on a toilet lid on the third floor.
'Nora's proposing we meet up right now,' Damien says as he looks up from his phone.
'What time is it?' I ask.
'Just past nine.'
'Isn't that a little early?'
'Why? The lights are off, aren't they?'
'Sure, but it's only one hour after closing time. Maybe there's still people on other floors. Cleaning or something.'
Damien hums, and texts Nora again. After he while he speaks again.
'Nora says the lights on her floor are off as well. It would be a weird system if the third floor and ground floor are off, but not in between.'
'I guess that makes sense.'
I admit that, but don't do anything. I stay on the ground, and so does Damien. I stare at the blank wall in front of me. We managed to sneak behind an information board in a corner of the exhibition.
'Do you think they have motion sensors?' Damien asks.
'What?'
'Nora texted me that. What if the museum has motion sensors?'
'Well...'
'Then the second we walk into the rest of the exhibition an alarm will go off, right?'
'We'll have to be quick then.'
He sighs.
'It's not like we can stay here until next morning.'
He doesn't respond. Maybe he's right. It would be a strange way to clean a building; first the ground and top floor, and then everything in between. It wouldn't make sense. Perhaps we would be okay if we went to meet with Nora right now.
But then there's the potential motion sensor. I didn't even think of that. If it goes off, we only have a limited time to switch the piece with Nora's grandmother's stone.
On paper, the plan isn't very complicated. Now that I'm actually here, in a closed museum, hiding behind some board. I wouldn't say I'm having second thoughts. Not serious ones, anyway. But if Damien would tell me he wanted out...
'Nora says we can just try,' he says.
'Oh.'
