After a quick breakfast, I went to school and just made it to homeroom before the bell rang. I did not forget my strange dream. It felt too real to just cast away.
My friend rushed over to my desk as soon as I sat down. "Ari, you will not believe what happened yesterday! Okay so..."
I smiled and nodded every once in a while, pretending to listen to her ramble as I stressed over the dream.
"Hey Ally?" I interrupted what was sure to be a long one sided conversation.
"Yeah?" She was used to my wandering mind after all the years we had been friends.
"Have you ever had a dream that felt too real? I mean like when you woke up you didn't know which reality was real and which was the dream?"
"No." She sounded upset by it. "I wish something that cool would happen to me. It's got to be some sort of supernatural thing though. What was yours like?"
I cleared my throat uncomfortably. I wasn't sure if I should tell her or not. Some gut feeling was telling me not to.
"It was prophetic, I guess?" I finally said.
Her eyes widened, "Really? Tell me everything!"
Just then, the first bell rang, signaling the start of class. Ally gave me a look that said 'tell me everything later' and walked off to her seat.
I sat through mathematics, english, history, science, and countless other classes thinking about the dream. Even lunch I was distracted, picking at my roll with a fork.
Finally, by study hall, I had begun to slowly ease back into my normal routine. My study hall was chaotic, nothing Mr. Holmes did could ever make a difference, so he had stopped trying and instead gave the reins to his students. Today a group of us were playing truth or dare while there were other people studying and others played instruments around the room. The study hall shared a room with the band room for the school was too small and short staffed. (Mr. Holmes was also the band teacher.)
"Truth or dare?" asked Sara, another of my friends.
"Dare," I answered.
"I dare you to draw a smiley face on Mr. Holmes' whiteboard," she said.
I replied with a smile. I got up from my place on the floor and walked over to the whiteboard. Taking a marker in hand, I drew a giant circle with two eyes and a smiling mouth.
I heard laughing from my friends behind me. They weren't laughing at me, they were laughing with me. It was all in good natured fun here.
Mr. Holmes looked at me with a knowing smile. I just shrugged, "You like it? I think it brightens your board."
He laughed out loud at that. "You know, I think I'll leave it there for band!"
I smiled and went back to my group. Looking at Caleb, a close friend, I asked, "Truth or dare Caleb?"
"Hmm..." He pretended to think about it. He always said dare. It was like a broken record every time we all played. "Dare."
"Okay, I dare you to say something completely out of context to one of the study groups," I said with a smile.
He got up obediently and said something to the group closest to us. Whatever he said had to be good, as they gave him some seriously weird looks. We all laughed again.
The door to the band/study hall room burst open with a startling bang.
