That night I waited until the moon had risen, lighting the sky with a soft glow, to put the plan into action.
My new fear earlier that say had shaken me more then I cared to admit, which caused me to be even more desperate to escape. By now I thought we would have a pretty good chance overall.
I woke Caleb with my hand over his mouth to make sure there would be no noise to alert the guards.
When he was awake, I filled him in.
"We escape tomorrow morning."
"Why not tonight? Why not now?" he asked. Thankfully he was all in even without knowing my plan.
"Because," I replied. "There's no way we could get out of this room alone without the guards opening the door. Plus we can't escape if we're bone tired."
At his slight nod, I plowed ahead.
"What we do is tomorrow morning when they open the door to take us to Jeanine, we knock them out and run. We will run out a side exit I discovered from listening to the guards. It will be quick and if we do it perfectly, we'll be far enough away from Erudite to the point where all we will leave Jeanine is frustration."
Caleb quickly interjected, "How do we know she won't come looking for us when we get out? It will take us time to find the portal, since we don't even know where it's located."
"I know. She won't look for us because she doesn't want a disruption to society or to admit the fact she did wrong or to admit that she's accepted that Divergent are real. She might try to find us discreetly, but we'll just have to blend in the best we can."
He still wasn't satisfied. "It could take us years to find the portal. We don't have years to spend here. Our families are probably worried sick."
I nodded easily. "Based on my calculations, the portal couldn't be anywhere in the city. Think about it. There are five factions: Erudite, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Abnegation. We can rule two of them out immediately. It can't be in Erudite because after we came through the portal, it took a bit to actually get to Erudite, we didn't just land in it. Besides, it's too risky to stay in Jeanine's faction."
Caleb seemed to agree, but still added, "And the other faction?"
"Amity. It's all farmland and from my understanding, it's a long ways away from Erudite. The farms are past the wall, and we never passed the wall. We were already inside it when we got here."
"That still leaves three factions to search."
"Technically, yes. We can't go to Candor though. Since they are the ones obsessed with truth, it's logical to assume they have some sort of truth telling serum like the fear serum Jeanine has. If they were to administer it to us, we be right back in Jeanine's hands."
"Alright," Caleb said, warming up to the concept. "So we have to search Dauntless and Abnegation. That's still two factions."
I sighed, "You aren't going to like this part. We should split up. We'd get them searched in half the time and it would be less suspicious than having us both go from one faction to the other."
"I agree, but I don't like splitting up. We will do it though. Anything to get back home, right?" he relented.
"Right."
"Who will go to which faction?"
"I'm going to be heading off to Dauntless and you to Abnegation. I think the both of us will fit in better in those factions. You just have to remember that the Abnegation are completely selfless. No looking in the mirror, no eating foods like you're used to, no fancy clothes. We have to blend in or we are wise than dead."
"Got it. Be careful okay Ari? I couldn't live with myself if something happened to you."
I smiled sadly, "Same goes for you."
