"A handful of people from all walks of life, chosen at random by a raffle to board the S.M.P.C and travel the stars to the new Earth!"

The international announcement had excited everyone, especially the people who couldn't have dreamed of paying for one of the expensive trips even if they used every penny that had.

People like Tom Simons.

Imagine to teen's surprise when his name was announced, among the other 49, as chosen to board the spaceship and escape the dying planet.

No one could have known that the trip was destined for disaster.

--------------------

Tommy's eyes drifted open as shattered glass laid around him, leaving stinging cuts on his face. Through the fog in his head, he tried to sit up, taking a breath before immediately coughing violently. As his eyes focused and smoke filled his lungs suddenly realized something had gone horribly wrong.

His body was wracked with coughs as he desperately tried to crawl out of the shattered sleep pod. He fell over the side, the strength not yet returning to his muscles. Tommy let out a yelp as a sharp pain pierced his leg, the broken glass slicing his shin.

"F-Fuck-" Tommy rasped, breaking into another fit of coughs. As much as he just wanted to lay on the floor and not move his leg, something inside of him told him that if he didn't get out, he wouldn't see another day.

And Tom Simons was far too big a man to not see another day.

Tommy rolled onto his stomach, doing his best to ignore the pain that pulsed from his leg. For now, his placement on the ground allowed him to have a few gasps of fresh enough air.

At least it didn't send him into another coughing fit.

Ignoring the small shards of glass that left small cuts on his hands, Tommy dragged himself across the ground and to the, luckily, open doorway. The hallway was filled with smoke, but luckily there was still the layer of air. The great Tommy wouldn't be dying to smoke today.

He crawled down the hallway, another doorway catching his eye. What was in there? He had only gotten a brief tour of the ship before he was practically forced into a long distance sleep pod.

A bit fucked up selecting a 17 year old orphan with no guardian other than another government agent to give consent to go on a basically experimental space voyage.

Tommy pulled himself to the doorway, squinting and trying to make out what was in there. The familiar label of one of the only crates that for whatever reason, he had actually paid attention to.

Oxygen tanks.

A hopeful thought cross his mind. If he could get an oxygen tank, he might be able to find an exit easier. He wouldn't have to worry about the smoke quite as much.

Tommy took a gulp of air, pulling himself up onto the crate, unlatching it. He pulled a canister about the same size as a large water bottle, designed only to hold about 6 hours of oxygen.

It would be more than enough for Tommy.

He attached the tube and mask that had previously been stuck to the side to the top of the canister. Luckily, the lessons on the basic knowledge needed for post-landing was still fresh in his mind, as he had been put in the sleep pod not long after being taught them.

Tommy attached the oxygen mask to his face and took a deep breath. The pure and clean air filled his lungs. He'd almost forgotten what it was like with all the pollution he'd left behind on Earth.

Tommy realized he didn't have time to dwell on this. He still needed to get out of this ship. The smoke meant there was a fire somewhere and he wasn't keen on finding out whether or not it was close.

Thanks to the mask, he was able to pull himself up, using the wall as support to take weight off his injured leg, and walk more or less upright.

Well, if it weren't for the significant tilt in the entire ship. So really he was standing somewhat tilted but he didn't really care.

He made his way through the hall, looking for anything he could use as an exit. He knew that he wouldn't be able to open an airlock as it seemed the power was out, so he was scouring the walls for holes. Tommy actually found them quite regularly. The only problem was that there was no way a big man like him could possibly fit through.

There were tons of gashes and holes but most were either barely big enough for him to get an arm through of blocked by debris. Tommy was starting to worry there wasn't going to be an easy way out.

The teen was so focused on scouring the walls and ceiling for holes that he didn't notice the smoke thinning out at first. When he finally did, it was nearly gone.

"Huh?" He mumbled.

Tommy looked around, trying to find where the smoke was escaping from. Continuing down the hall with his limp, he soon notices a large gash in the wall of the ship. It seemed to have been made by a large boulder that sat at the far end of the gash, buried in the metal the crumpled like aluminum foil.

What amazing quality material for a space ship.

Right as Tommy was about to step out of the smoking ship, a thought crossed his mind.

He didn't know how long and far the fire would burn. If it got too out of hand, any supplies in the ship would be burned up with it. Important things, like bandages and food.

His throbbing leg sent sharp pain with each step, simultaneously telling him to go get the medical supplies and to give up and rest. He debated the two choices, bouncing the possibilities around his head.

There was a sudden bang from somewhere far inside the ship and Tommy made a choice.
