It was a sunny morning and Steve was leaning against the counter, talking to a couple of the other Avengers.
"I swear to God, if Clint's in the vents again." Natasha gritted, looking up towards the ceiling.
"He's gonna double his injury count if Nat catches him." Stark added, chuckling along with Steve after taking a sip of his dark, steaming coffee.
"Yeah right he will." Natasha smirked, looking back at the two. "So how's Bucky been?"
It had been a few days since the Avengers had taken Bucky in after learning about his past. Bucky had managed to break himself away from the serum's affects but a lot of them were still skeptical.
"He hasn't come out of that room since he got here." Steve mumbled scratching the back of his head. "Maybe I should go check on him.."
"I mean.. he could easily kill you, but if you want to I think you should." Tony interrupted as he put his empty mug down, looking like he was deep in thought.
"Stop reading my mind Stark." The red head joked, clearly she was going to say the same thing. "If you get him to trust us we can help him."
The blond stopped and thought for a second. Bucky was his friend, his best friend, at some point even his boyfriend. If Bucky truly remembered him then he wouldn't dare to hurt him. Getting lost in his thoughts, he started to daydream. The things they used to do together, protecting eachother, fighting for eachother, always being there for eachother and most important of all.. loving eachother. Steve remembered sharing his first time with Bucky, his first kiss, his first time holding hands, cuddling, basically everything. He let out a sigh, completely blocking out everything around him. He just wished things could go back to how they used to be, when times were simpler.
"CAP!" Tony was waving a hand infront of Steve's face trying to get him out of his daze.
"Oh uh, sorry." The blond got scared, snapping out of his daydream.
"Whoever it was in your head that managed to get that smile out of you should be proud." Natasha teased, lightly elbowing Steve's side making his smile turn into an unimpressed expression."Listen, nobody was in my head, alright? I was just..." His sentence rolled off into nothing as he looked for excuses.
"You were what?" Nat pushed, a knowing smirk growing or her face along with an arched eyebrow.
"I was-, I'm just gonna go check on him." He attempted to change the subject which pulled a chuckle from both Nat and Tony's lips. Groaning under his breath, he walked away from the two that were still chuckling behind him.
When the elevator stopped at the floor with all the rooms, he stepped out, gazing from door to door, trying to find the one missing a logo. It was right at the end of the corridor, isolated from everything else. Once he got to the door, he stopped, a hand hovering over the door ready to knock. Hopefully, this isn't a mistake. He thought. And with that, he let go of the breath he was holding and knocked, trying to somehow sound friendly in the action. But there was nothing. He knocked again... Nothing.
Steve hesitated, but opened the door, scared that Bucky had maybe been hurt, only to be surprised by a peaceful sleeping brunet. He mentally cursed himself for being so dumb, it was early morning of course he'd be sleeping. Now what was he gonna do, just wait for him to wake up? Steve stood there like an idiot, not knowing what to do. Millions of thoughts were spinning around the blond's head, what was he supposed to do? He was disturbed by stirring from the side of the room, the brunet seemed to be twisting and turning, his face scrunched into a mean expression and his breaths quick and hard. Without thinking, the now worried blond went over to him, staring down at his pained face.
"Bucky?" He said quietly at first but when he saw that it didn't do anything he said it louder.
"Bucky, wake up!" He shook the man, but still, nothing.
"BUCK-" The brunet flew up out of his bed, his human hand wrapping itself around Steve's pale neck. His grip was tight and his eyes were rolled back in his head, almost like he was in a trance. Steve clutched his hand, desperately trying to pry it off, but nothing was working and he couldn't breathe. Steve was scared, not because he was a breath away from death, but because of the others. He knew that this wasn't Bucky and if the Avengers found him dead with Bucky at fault, what would they do to the poor man?
"B-bucky, it's.. I-I'm Steve. You're o-okay. Y-you're... Bucky. James Buchanan B-barnes." Steve struggled, watching as Bucky's eyes rolled back into view, they instantly widened.
"Steve?" The blond vigorously nodded, wheezing in the most air he could get.
"Oh god.. Steve." He felt the tight grip loosen from his neck, his body falling frail on the floor as he gasped for air. It reminded him of his asthmatic days."Steve, I'm so sorry. Fuck." Bucky sounded like he was going to cry, his voice just above a shaky whisper. He fell to his knees, head in hands, legs folded, he just looked so vulnerable, too vulnerable for Steve's likings. After catching his breath, the blond reached out to comfort Bucky.
"Don't touch me." Bucky gritted before he could even touch him. "I'm a monster." A pang of hurt and guilt flooded through Steve's heart. Bucky, his Bucky, thought of himself as a monster and it wasn't even his fault. Steve had so much to say, so much to feel, it all just came out at once.
"Bucky I've known you since we were little, you were always there for me, you looked after me, always, you cared for me, you loved me." Steve started."What are you getting at here?"
"Remember when I used to put newspapers in my shoes just so you wouldn't think I was so short?" The blond continued with a chuckle, completely ignoring Bucky's question. "How we used to secretly hold hands under the table when we were on those double dates?" The blond smiled fondly at the memory, as he watched Bucky's hands fall from his head.
"All of those memories were 'cause of you. Those happy times were all because of you. And they're all still the best moments of my life. You had such an impact on me that when I lost you, I vowed to never forget you and that I'd keep you in my heart till the day I die." A tear rolled down his cheek. "So when you feel like a monster Bucky, please try to remember that you're still the Bucky I know, you're still the Bucky I care for. Even if they- if they made you do bad things Buck, I-" His voice cracked as he grabbed onto the brunets fingers , looking into his dazzling azure eyes, focusing on each eye and taking in their beautiful shimmer.
"I still love you, I always will."
Steve was attacked by a hug from the brunet, the small sobs from the boy broke his heart making him wrap his strong arms around his figure, letting him relax into the crook of his neck."I'm so sorry Steve." Bucky cried, wrapping his arms around the other boy's neck.
"Its okay Bucky, I'm here." He rubbed circles onto his back, his other hand fiddling with the boy's thick brown locks. "Plus, I could get used to you choking me like that... It was kinda hot." Steve joked, trying to ease the mood. Bucky laughed in response, tears still streaming down his face.
"I don't know if I'm happy or sad anymore." The brunet said, reluctantly breaking the hug as he sniffled, wiping away his tears.
"You don't have to be anything, just be you, okay?" He took ahold of the boy's cold hands again as he looked deeply into his eyes. "God, I missed your eyes." He accidentally said aloud.
"You sure you didn't miss anything else?" Bucky questioned with a quirked brow, a smirk growing onto his wine red lips.
"Bucky!" Steve whined, playfully hitting him and earning a loud laugh from the brunet.
----------
"No one's in your head hmm Steve?" Natasha chuckled, throwing some popcorn into her mouth.
"Isn't it illegal to be watching them?" Stark walked up to her with another cup of steaming coffee and Nat opened her mouth to speak, but when she did she was interrupted.
"I think it was worth it." They heard from the vents.
"CLINT?!" Natasha spat.
"Oh shit."
