"Please, Jungkook... don't take Yoongi from me."
Jungkook is silent for a moment.
"Hyung," he begins, bewildered by Jimin's pleading request. "Is that really why you think I'm here? To take your human away?"
Jimin blinks at him through tears, clearly unsure whether to believe him or not.
"I promise," Jungkook continues, feeling a pang of sympathy for his oldest friend. "Mia is my only concern. Weren't you given another year to help Yoongi? That's the last I'd heard of it..."
At this, Jimin finally seems to trust him. His face crumples under the weight of his emotions.
"I-I don't know what to s-say," he manages through his tears. "I was... s-so convinced - that Archangel Namjoon sent you to f-finish the j-job. Because I'm f-failing."
"No!" Jungkook reassures him, placing a calming hand on his upper arm. "Namjoon assigned me to Mia. That's all. Wait - is this why you were acting so weird when we went for drinks? I figured you were just playing dumb in front of Yoongi."
Jimin nods, too upset to speak.
"Hyung," Jungkook urges. "Talk to me. Why are you so upset? You're doing a great job."
At this, Jimin laughs bitterly, shaking his head. "No, I'm not. I'm failing miserably. I've been trying to help Yoongi for years now, and it feels like I'm getting nowhere. Every time I feel like I'm getting through to him, he retreats back into his shell. It's one step forward, two steps back."
At this, Jungkook pulls his teary friend into a hug. He feels a rush of shame, similar to the one he felt in Mia's office earlier, for not realising how distressed his friend had been.
Most likely, the thought hadn't even crossed him mind that Jimin was struggling. Sure, Yoongi is a difficult case - but Jimin is an unbelievable Guardian - better than any of the others. Better than Jungkook. Before he came down to help Yoongi, it was Jimin's name that rang throughout the halls of Heaven, not Jungkook's. It was Jimin who was up for promotion - not him.
But that was before Yoongi.
Before his oldest friend, the angel he looked up to the most, became the emotional human he saw before him.
"Jimin..." he begins now, fearing he knows the answer to the question he is about to ask. "When was the last time you went home? To Heaven, I mean."
Jimin's gaze averts at the question as he pulls out of the hug. A sinking feeling sets into Jungkook's stomach.
