He wants her to trust him.
Kei had just come home from Nationals. He wasn't able to see (Y/N) for quite some time and it bothered him greatly. Sure they occasionally called and messaged each other but it wasn't the same. He doesn't want to admit that he missed her.
Tsukishima was having trouble sleeping, despite the fact that it was 3 a.m. He was tossing and turning in his bed, which was getting on his nerves. He took his glasses from his bedside table and turned on his phone. He was debating whether or not to call (Y/N). His thumb was brushing up against the green button. By the way he was staring as if burning a hole in it, it appeared as if the smartphone had done something that enraged him.
His phone rang, almost as if (Y/N) could read his mind. His eyes widened, and he couldn't help but smile. He waited for it to ring a few more times before answering.
"What the hell do you want?" he spit out harshly, but a grin played across his lips.
"You're such a jerk, Hotaru-chan! Oh, why are you still awake?"
He couldn't see her, but he was sure she was tilting her head cutely when she said that.
He lied through his teeth, "You woke me up."
"Liar! How naughty, Hotaru-chan!"
Tsukishima bit his lower lip to keep his smile from widening. (Y/N) may be a moron at times, but he admits that she is the only one who can easily read him.
"Whatever."
"Hehe, I knew it! Anyway, trouble in paradise?"
Kei remained silent.
"Mmm, I'm having trouble sleeping as well; I had a nightmare."
His brow furrowed in concern.
"What kind of nightmare?"
"The frightening kind. Boo! How about you, Hotaru-chan?"
It was always like this with her, Tsukishima noticed. She doesn't really elaborate on what she's feeling and it frustrated him to no end. He wants to know. He wants to help her, just like how she did with him. As a result, he remained silent.
(Y/N) seemed to read the atmosphere and kept talking.
"I see, I see. Ne ne, look out your window, Hotaru-chan."
The blonde was taken aback and scrambled out of his bed hastily to open his window. Did this cretin actually...
There was no one there. Tsukishima took a deep breath to calm himself. She nearly caused him to have a heart attack.
"Haha! I got you, Hotaru-chan, didn't I? Of course, I wouldn't be there, it's so late~!" he heard her laugh.
"But if you give me 10 minutes, I can run there, and you'll be overjoyed to see me! Isn't it true that I'm very nice?"
He heard shuffling on the other end of the line. Was she really going to come to him this late? Knowing her, she probably would, which is why he ended the call abruptly and grabbed a thick green sweater from his closet to wear. It was very chilly outside.
A tap came on his bedroom window a few minutes later. It sounded like rocks were hurled at it. He hurriedly opened his blinds to find (Y/N) standing there with a silly smile on her face and swinging her arms wildly like those inflatable wiggly balloon men outside newly-opened establishments. Kei almost burst out laughing at how foolish she looked.
"What's your issue, you squirt?" he asked as soon as he approached her.
"Wow, Hotaru-chan! Good morning to you as well!"
He rolled his eyes as he examined her figure. She was dressed in a gorgeous lime-colored cardigan that looked to be overly large for her, as well as a long flowing cream-colored dress. She looked very nice, but she also appeared worn out and skinnier. The blonde clenched his fists in worry.
"I'll take you someplace!" she said, taking his larger hands in her little ones, and Tsukishima followed wordlessly, his head clouded with questions.
When he awoke from his trance, they were already at the location where (Y/N) had planned to take him. It was a cliff overlooking the lights of their calm town, where they could also stargaze. It was stunning. There was a wonderfully adorned fence around the cliff to keep people from plummeting to their deaths, as well as a massive rattan-based hammock.
(Y/N) sat on it and motioned for Tsukishima to follow and sit close to her. He gave up without a fight. When he felt (Y/N)'s head slide onto his shoulder, he stiffened. She was also embracing his arm, which was close to her. Kei could feel his heart pounding inside his ribcage. He was hoping she wouldn't hear it. If she did, she opted not to say anything about it.
"I'm exhausted, Kei."
She addressed him by name. She usually does not, but she did this time. Tsukishima assumed she was serious because of the tone she used.
"From my work, from school, from everything."
The pink-haired girl straightened up and hid her face in the crook of his neck.
"You smell quite wonderful," he thought he felt her grin on his skin. The contact of her lips to his skin sent electrifying shocks to his body.
He remained silent, preferring to simply listen to her rant. There was a comfortable silence for a few seconds before he decided to ask her a question.
"What... was your nightmare about?" he said, barely above a whisper.
"It had something to do with my parents."
The small girl rose up and walked over to the fence, where she gazed up at the sky. Kei's breath hitched as her irises twinkled prettily. It was an enthralling sight to behold.
"Your parents, huh?"
"Mmm, it seemed more like revisiting a horrible memory than a nightmare. I was only 8 years old then."
"What... happened?" Tsukishima inquired, his voice hesitant.
(Y/N) gave him a smile that spoke thousands of words. What he heard next made his eyes well up tears of shock? Disbelief? Pity? He didn't know.
"Right in front of me, they shot themselves in the head."
