It was simply another ordinary day. The birds were chirping, and it was softly snowing. He'd go to school, see (Y/N), and maybe even spend the night in her hospital room. It was meant to be just another ordinary day.
Except that it wasn't.
It just took one phone call for Kei's world to fall apart.
"I'm sorry, we weren't able to stop her."
That's what the hospital personnel informed him.
Why?
Why did the staff allow her to travel so freely? They knew of her condition. Why didn't they secure the door to the rooftop? Why hadn't somebody been appointed to care after her? Why were they so irresponsible?
Why wasn't he able to do something?
Perhaps if he had been enough, she would not have abandoned him.
"But (Y/N) has always assured you that you were."
Perhaps he'd be able to stop her if he didn't leave that night.
"Kei, it's not your fault."
Was he not persuading enough? Was he really so unpleasant to be around?
"I'm the happiest when I'm with you, Kei."
So then, why?
He'd been grieving alone in his room for days now. He never left the room. He starved himself. His mother was becoming concerned.
She, too, was saddened by the girl's untimely death. After all, she treated (Y/N) as if she were her own child. It was painful. But her youngest son must have had it worst.
Kei would lie on his back and look at his ceiling, then suddenly burst out crying.
It was a heartbreaking sight to witness.
He dreamed of her that night when he closed his eyes. It was about a previous conversation that they had.
"Do you believe in happy endings, Hotaru-chan?"
Tsukishima recoiled in disgust.
"How old are you, 5?"
"Answer~"
"No."
"No, what?"
"I don't believe in happy endings."
"How cold, Hotaru-chan! Sexy. I like that." she winked, and he rolled his eyes as he adjusted his spectacles.
"I want Hotaru-chan to have a happy ending of his own!"
"Oh?" he asked, amused, entertaining her even more.
"Mm! You usually appear gloomy, Edgelord. Hehe."
The boy huffed.
"And how about you?"
(Y/N) tilted her head in question, pink hair framing her face attractively.
"Do you believe in happy endings?" he repeated.
"Of course!" she answered enthusiastically, even forcing her eyes shut and nodding her head to prove her point.
"How do you envision your happy ending, pipsqueak?"
"Who knows?" she said with a knowing smile, and he couldn't help but wonder.
"But," the girl continued, forcing him to look at her, "if my happy ending was with you, I certainly wouldn't mind!"
Kei awoke with a cold sweat.
He was overcome with emotion as a result of his dream. He sat up in his bed, staring blankly at his wall. His eyes were red and swollen, and it stung from all the tears he had shed. His throat dried up and it badly needed water.
"I want Hotaru-chan to have a happy ending of his own!"
"Idiot," he mumbled under his breath, his lips quivering in a quiet sob.
"Unfair," he choked on his tears, "You're so unfair."
He looked out his window and it was snowing.
Tsukishima Kei hated winter.
