My shirt clung to me with sweat but I pushed myself to go deeper into the woods.
My feet were pounding on the ground and my heart was beating so fast It could probably be heard from a mile away. But it wasn't the dead I was worried about. It was the living. When bigger groups found people like me, they would steal everything i had and if I wouldn't give them what I wanted... well, let's just say it's not going to end well for me.A huge group had just passed by me. Maybe 15 people. Sure, being in a group wouldn't hurt but I couldn't risk just walking up to them like that. Or worse, being caught by them.
I could handle the dead. They just walked around like blind idiots. Always tripping over their own feet. I'd have to admit they were pretty fowl though. They smell worse than the sewers back in New York.
New York. I miss it. The way it used to be. We were one of the first places to get hit. Large city's went down first. More people. More dead.
It wasn't fair. Not of it was. Getting torn apart from your family, from everything you knew and having to survive on your own. Having to kill people daily. I mean, yeah they were already dead but that doesn't change the fact that at one point they were just like you. They had a family and a life and friends and they tried to survive just like you. An now it's gone.
It's been this way for about four months. And so much had changed already. No power. Most of the water everywhere was shut off, plus all the houses in or near New York have been raided already.
Which was bad for me because I was running a little low on ammo. I tried to avoid using the gun because of the noise it causes and I like to keep the ammo for emergencies. Plus I'm really handy with a knife.
I stopped running and sat down on a log behind a tree breathing heavily. I was pretty sure they didn't see me and if they did I was out of sight before they could have gotten to the hill.
I thought back to before all of this started and what I wouldn't give to get it back.
