Dangerous

Probably about a week went by of the same thing.
Get up, eat a small breakfast, lay around and do nothing all day, and then just go and lay in bed for the red of the night because I couldn't sleep. Then repeat.
But today was different, because reality just slapped us in the face
"We're out of food..." My father said quietly.
"What! We can't be. There's got to be more somewhere!"
Trey dashed around the kitchen opening all the cabinets and drawers only to find nothing.
"Somebody needs to go and see if they can find a shop or some other people that we can get food from" my mother said
"I'll go!" Me and Trey said in unison
"No. It's too dangerous. We don't even know where the closest place might be. I'm not letting either of you go out there."my father said sternly.
Okay Dani time for you're awesome negotiating skills.
"Look, there are dead people roaming around eating each other. It's pretty much the end of the world and I'm going to bet that there's going to be a time where me and Trey are going to be out there alone and have to fend for ourselves. It's better we practice now rather than wait."
Mom and father exchanged worried looks.
"I said no, and no means no."

"Dad please!"

"She's right. She needs to feel what it's like to be out there alone. She needs to learn how to fend for herself and even though I hate the idea of them going out alone I do think it's the right choice."

I looked at my mom in amazement. I never thought she'd say something like that. She was actually saying that we should go out on our own, with dead people everywhere.

My father sat there for a few moments with his brows pressed together thinking. After a while he finally spoke.
"Alright, but you have to stick together and carry a gun and don't go more than around 5 miles. I want you back here by tonight."

I almost jumped up and down with excitement.
"Yay!" I run over and wrap my arms around Mom and Dad
"Thank you! I love you! And we won't die"
I unlock my arms from around them and then happily skip up into my room.

I had been trying not to use my arm for the past week, and although it's pretty hard I think I did a pretty good job because it's healing really fast. Whatever my brother did to get it back in place, worked because now it didn't hurt very much and the swelling and bruises were almost gone.

I flung the door to my room open and went to my closet to grab my backpack.

On the way out of my room I pass by a mirror and stop to look at myself.
Myself?
I didn't even look like Dani. My straight blonde hair was matted and tangled, my face was caked in dust, sweat, and dirt, and I had been wearing the same clothes for almost 4 days. I had probably lost a couple of pounds too.
It's amazing what this world can do to you.

I walk down the stairs and meet the rest of my family in the kitchen. Trey already had his stuff ready and in his hand he held a gun.
Our only gun.
It only had five bullets in it when we left and we haven't used it since.
"What if you need a gun while we are gone?" I ask frowning
"Sweety, we've been here for about a week and we haven't had to use it. We'll be fine" my mother smiled.
"Okay well we should head out before we loose anymore time"
"Okay well be super safe and you know the rest of the rules"
I smiled and looked at Trey who was also grinning, probably exited that he got to be somewhat alone for the first time in a while.

I placed my hand on the doorknob and pushed open the door, feeling the hot summer sun on my face.
"You ready?"
I look at Trey.
"Ready."

And with that we said goodbye again and headed out.

We determined that the direction we were heading in was west and east was the way back to the house.
For around the first mile we were talking. Talking about what we were going to find, what we were going to do. All that stuff.
After a while, though, it fell silent.

We walked about another two hours in silence and still nothing out on the horizon.

"What if we don't find anything."
That question had been in my head since we left.
Trey looked down and didn't say anything. I figured he had been thinking the same thing he just hadn't brought it up.
"I'm serious! What if we walk all day and never find anything!"
"Then we keep walking the next day!"
"And the next and the next and the next!"
"We are bound to find something eventually!"
"And how long is eventually!"
I stop and turn towards him
"We've been walking for hours and we've seen nothing. Not even a dead person!"

He didn't respond, he just kept walking. Because he knew I had point.
But I knew that we had to try.
