Truck

I lay in the back of our truck, my head resting on Trey's shoulder. I look out the window and my eyes scan across the horizon.
The sun was just starting to rise and the amount of cars on the road was breathtaking. I guess it was everybody's idea to get out of the city.
Even though it was only around 5:30 the thought of sleeping never even crossed my mind. I still couldn't wrap my mind around the thought of dead people. Like dead people actually walking around. I still Didn't know if I believed it but I wasn't taking any chances by falling asleep.

Around 30 minutes passed of us sitting in traffic when I saw something I'd never forget.
People, a family. Running down the street screaming at the top of their lungs, while being pursued by some nasty sons of bitches. Their clothes were bloody and torn. Parts of their skin were peeling off and their hair was very thin and spider web like.
"Oh my god.." I say under my breath

"We have to do something! We cant just sit here and watch them die!" Trey screams

"They aren't our problem."
I say there with my jaw almost touching the floor. I can't believe my dad just said that. "They aren't our problem." that is the most horrible thing I've ever heard anybody say.
"How could you say that?"I screech
I lean forward in my seat but Trey pulled me back.
"Look I know this is horrible but right now until it gets better it's every man for himself. It's us our them."

"Okay cool, so next time you're running for your life from a bunch of dead people I'll just leave you be."

"Honey, calm down. The last thing we need right now is all of us fighting."

"Well, mom, actually the last thing we need right now is people dying when we could have done something."

"Dani, that's enough!" She said sternly.
I sigh annoyingly and lay back in my seat and stare at all the cars trying to get out.

Around an hour later we were in Pennsylvania and the traffic had thinned out but the people had gotten worse. They were running around. I had witnessed people getting bit. People begging for a ride and we just kept driving. I saw people laying on the street dead. I saw people laying on the street alive, getting eaten alive. They're guts laid out around them and them gasping for air and screaming for help. I averted my eyes and I knew it was something I would never be able to get out of my head.

I wasn't really paying attention to anything else, I was just studying the design in the upholstery when we suddenly stopped.
"Dad? Why did we stop?"

"Cause this asshat apparent thought it would be a great idea to stop in the middle of an intersection."

"Honey we should go around him. It's not a good idea to stop here." My mom pleaded

"Well you think if I could have gone around him I would have by now? He's taking up-"

"Shit! Drive!" My mom screams

I turn to my left just in time to see a van plow into the side of us and everything go black.

I wake up with a ringing in my ears and a sharp throbbing pain on the side of my head, but that was nothing compared to the pain that I felt in my wrist.
"God damn." I croak

"Hey, she's up."

"Trey?" I realized that I was in his arms and he was trying his hardest to run while carrying me.
Trey started slowing down and I realized that we were in a field. No Cars or roads could be seen from where I was being held.

Trey came to a complete stop and sat me down in the soft grass. I wince at the pain that was shooting through my body.
"What the hell happened?" I manage to say
"Well we got slammed by another car and you took most of the force. We think you probably have a concussion and you most definitely broke your wrist."

"Great."

I look down at my wrist and gasp a little when I see it. No wonder it hurt so much it was bent pretty well. I have a really tough stomach but my arm almost made me hurl.
I was normally really physically strong and hardly ever cried at pain but today it was close.
"Do you think you can walk?"

I hadn't really thought about Trey carrying me and how strong he had to be running with me in his arms.
"Uhh, yeah I'm okay"
I lied. Everything was really hurting but I guess I didn't really have a choice. I knew that we had to get somewhere before nightfall and I knew we probably weren't going to due to the fact that there was an injured little 15 year old girl who could barley talk much less walk or run. But I knew we had a long trip ahead of us.
