"Mommy...whats a soulmate?"
She was grinning down at her five-year-old daughter.
"Now, who told you about soulmates, my love?"
Fiddling with her hands, she twirled from side to side.
"Daddy said that you are his soulmate...and when I asked him what it was, he-he told me to ask you."
Rolling her eyes at her husband's deflect. She quickly dried her hands and gently picked up her daughter. She placed her on the counter, so they were at eye level.
"How should I put this? Well..It's like a best friend but more. It's the one person in the world that knows you better than everyone else. It's the one person who knows you and accepted you and believes in you before anyone else did or when no one else would. And no matter what happens you'll always love them... You see mommy's mark on her neck?"
Pointing to the area below her ear, she saw her daughter curiously looking at her mark.
"Is that a circle of leaves?"
Letting out a small laugh, she gave her daughter a little poke to her side, making her giggle.
"It's an olive wreath, little one...in ancient Greece, they gave these out as prizes in the Olympic games."
She could see the wheels turning in her daughter's head. Smiling, she could practically see the light bulb go off in her head.
"Is that where Hercules and meg live?" "Yes! That's exactly where they lived...if I'm being honest, I think I got this mark because your daddy loves Greek mythology and is a huge sports fan."
She couldn't imagine her little girl older getting her soulmate mark.
"Mommy?"
Clearing her thoughts, she focused back on her girl.
"Will I get a soulmate mark like you and daddy?"
There it was. The million-dollar question. She moved some hair from her daughter's face. She wanted to stay in this moment forever. It was like she was torn about the future for her children. Part of her was waiting for the day her children got older for them to find their soulmates, but the other part was almost heartbreaking, to see her babies grow up and lead whatever lives they wanted with whoever was deemed worthy of them.
