Third person's POV
Every year the exams are feared, the holidays are relished and the new faces are a welcome sight for sore eyes. Amidst all those emotions time passes in the background, until one day they find themselves facing graduation and so it was for the doc gang. A proud moment for their boyfriends as well. The weather wasn't sunny, in fact, there was a 30% chance of rain but the administration took a chance and prepared the podium on the lush green lawns. The turnout was larger than anticipated so any students or friends moved back into the benches which were on the sides and a little way off. Lam and Park sat on the lawn along with Tim and Wat. Lin insisted that her dress was too precious to be soiled and took the bench making Preeth sit next to her.
"Is that P'Forth's parents P'?" Lin asked trying to spot them in the crowd.
"Yeah that's them" Park said.
"It's so sweet of them to come" Lin gushed. Beam's mom was in the seat next to Forth's mom attentively listening to the ceremony.
"What about P'Ming parents?" Lin asked seeing that he was sitting with Wayo in one of the seats behind.
"I don't think they came." Lam said.
"Stop being so nosy Lin" Wat teased.
"Hey, that's not being nosy, just curious. Like how you are curious about June" Lin teased back
"We're just good friends" Wat said turning back to see the ceremony
"Don't fool yourself Wat. We all know how you feel. Don't we Preeth? You should say something else we'll be the ones he'll come crying to" Lin said nudging Preeth.
Preeth wasn't with a book for a change. She put her hands on the seat of the bench and said "You'll be perfectly happy loving someone who doesn't love you back the same way..." Wat turned to look back at Preeth. ".... until they start loving someone else and then... you'll want to rip your heart out." Preeth completed in a monotone voice.
Everyone turned to look at her except Lam. He knew that feeling all too well... when Park would go out with other girls before they got together, before he knew about Lam's feelings for him, before Park confessed. How did Preeth identify with such a feeling, he wondered.
Preeth looked back at them. "You did ask me to say what I thought" she said in defence to Lin.
Wat got up abruptly. "I need to be somewhere," he said
"What? Where?" Tim asked ready to get up as well. Lin pushed Tim back down and said coyly "Sure, we'll see you later"
"What's gotten into him," Tim asked Lin watching Wat hurrying off into the distance
"He's finally taking advice from the ice princess dummy," Lin said to a confused Tim
The ceremony ended and the graduates headed back to their parents.
"Who is P'Sharp pushing in that wheelchair?" Lin asked
"That's his dad" Tim answered. "I met them at the entrance and gave his sister a hand with it. I tried to pay my respects to him but his sister said he had Alzheimer's or something and he couldn't communicate back all that well.
"Oh that's sad and I remember Wat saying his mom had died in an accident"
"How did he know that?" Tim asked
"P'Sharp's interested in my friend... obviously I asked Wat to find out," Lin shouted back at Tim.
"Lower your voice Nong" Lam said clearly irritated with the chatter. Preeth saw Beam hugging Forth's family and then Sharp went and congratulated Beam, Kit and Pha, introducing his dad and his sister. Then Beam pointed towards where the engineering gang was seated. Sharp swung the wheelchair around and started to head in their direction. Preeth froze.
It was like everything was going in slow motion. With every step that Sharp took with his family, Preeth's body got colder. Sharp paused at Lam and Park as they congratulated him. Preeth's hands clenched the bench tighter. The knuckles turned white. The wheelchair now came towards Preeth and Lin. A trail of sweat formed on Preeth's brow. The only sound she could hear was loud racing thuds. Her watch started to beep. Lin grabbed her hand and looked at the watch. It was beeping with an erratic count of her heartbeat.
"Preeth?" she called seeing her friend was standing in shock looking at Sharp's dad.
"Preeth?" she called again putting her hand on Preeth's shoulder. In an instant Preeth had twisted Lin's hand while her gaze didn't shift. Lin screamed to let go but Preeth didn't.
Park came into Preeth's field of vision blocking all else out "Nong Preeth! You are hurting Lin" and then he carefully held Preeth's hand. That was when Preeth came out of her trance, releasing her grasp. She looked at Lin who was cradling her hand in Tim's hug with tears in her eyes.
"I... I... I'm so sorry Lin" Preeth said. She stood there barely for two seconds after which she ran.
"What the hell?" Tim asked.
"Tim, take Lin to the medic on campus," Lam said. "Park, get the bike. We won't be able to outrun her."
Lam called Forth. He looked in the direction Preeth ran. It was towards engineering. The buildings were almost always open so Park needed to hurry else they could easily lose her in the massive campus.
"Lam, kind of busy here" Forth answered on the first ring
"It's Preeth. Sharp came by with his family and it spooked her."
"Where is she?"
"She ran. Park's getting the bike to follow her."
"Got it. I'll call once I tell the others."
Forth whispered the same words to Beam. Beam excused himself from his mom telling her they had plans to spend with their friends and that he'd make it over the weekend. Forth made similar excuses to his parents.
"Pha" Beam called out "We need to be somewhere" Beam said in front of his parents. Pha knew something was wrong as soon as the words came out of Beam's mouth. To top it off Forth was standing with a very solemn look behind him.
"Where to?" Kit said "We were making dinner plans. Don't ruin it Beam"
"Kit, not today. It just hit me that I promised we'd treat the engineering boys on the day of graduation." Pha said
"What? Oh fine" Kit was consoled that at least Ming would be around. Kit went to bid good bye to his parents rather reluctantly. Beam brought Ming, Yo and Pha up to speed.
"Where are we eating?" Kit asked running up to them.
"First we need to find Preeth" Pha said. Forth finished his call with Lam again and came back. "They think she's headed towards the football ground," Forth said.
"Isn't it locked at this hour?" Ming asked.
"We'll find out"
Kit was seething with anger once they told him what happened in the car. "How could he just ambush her like that?" Kit was yelling.
"P'Kit, maybe he just wanted to introduce her to his family. You know just as a friend." Yo said innocently
Across town, in Preeth's residence, Alma got a call on her phone from Derek. "I'm on my way, I got the notification," Alma said
"I'm sorry I'm out of town. Don't panic Alma. You need to be calm. Did you get the lab results back?"
"Yes"
"And?"
"It's not the boys"
