The baby naming party went well. No one asked Preeth's parents about her whereabouts. They were used to her absence in social gatherings. Forth and Beam's family had already left. Baby Prem (Forth had chosen the name in remembrance of Preeth's kindness) was fast asleep.
"Did Kongpob get Preeth's flight details?" Alma asked Derek. They held back to watch over their god-grandchild while the kids took a break.
"Yeah, he'll be picking her up"
"He's a good kid. Paul shouldn't worry that Kongpob didn't follow his footsteps to be an investigative officer like him." Alma said putting down her drink
"Like father like son though. I was surprised how quickly Kongpob figured out who Preeth was. But no one can be as good as Paul. I don't know of any other officer who would have been in touch with a victim's parents for years on end trying to solve their case."
"That's true. He took care of every lab DNA test that I requested of him, however improbable"
The band had left but their instruments were still on stage. The juniors and seniors were casually seated now.
"I wish Preeth would have come," Beam said resting his head on Forth's shoulders on the couch.
Preeth's words came back to Lin at the mention of her name
"How about we go visit her after this babe? I think she'll be happy to see us" Forth said stroking his boyfriend's hand
I'll miss P'Forth's duality of Power and compassion...
"She hates having us in her room," Wat said
...Wat's ability to see everything with a laugh...
"That's cause you always bring in food and make a mess!" Kit said
... P'Kit's fire-like passion for ones he calls his own...
"Lin will protect us, won't you Lin," Tim asked giving Lin a kiss on her head. "Are you ok sweetie? You were really quiet today" Tim asked her softly.
...Tim's relentless care...
"I've sent over some pictures in the group so she didn't miss much" Ming said hugging Kit from behind
...P'Ming's cool calm demeanour...
Lam was looking at Park's phone to check the photos Ming sent.
... P'Lam and P'Park's silent protectiveness...
"Maybe we can take her to the pub tonight!" Yo said. Yo never suggested going to a pub. All eyes were on Yo. "What? Preeth likes it there and we can celebrate again!" he said.
...P'Yo's infallible strength in kindness...
Pha ruffled his boyfriend's hair admiring his innocence. "Sure Yo, we can ask her"
... P'Pha's unending generosity...
"Maybe we can request another performance from Lin in the pub tonight," Park said looking at Lin
"How about a song now Lin?" Tim asked hoping it'll cheer her up
Lin obliged. She handed the guitar to Forth.
"Which one?" Forth asked her
"A million dreams"
...I'm not running away Lin. Far from it. I have to shed my nightmares and find those dreams that people talk about. I need a purpose to find and I should be the one in search of it....
"Isn't that the same song you sang at the beach during the first year?" Beam asked.
"It was never my song" Lin smiled even though she was sad. Any moment now, Preeth's flight would be taking off. As Lin began to sing, her voice began to show the sorrow she was holding back.
Alma was looking at the GPS tracking on her phone. The blip disappeared from Alma's screen when ten thousand feet in the air a phone was switched off, never to be turned on again
The owner of the phone put headphones on her wavy hair and listened to the very same song as she covered herself with a jacket that wasn't hers. A set of warm tears streamed down her tanned face.
Alma closed her eyes. Her little baby was going out into the world, without her vigilance or shelter. She clutched the phone tighter. Derek slowly clasped her hand and gave her a gentle hug. Soft sniffles were heard... the dam was broken...
On stage, tears started to flow uninhibited from Lin's closed eyes and no one understood what happened when she collapsed on the stage sobbing without restraint.
