"Hey look who's here" Lin pointed to the restaurant door. Forth and Beam entered followed by Pha and Kit.
"Aren't you guys supposed to be in classes?" Kit asked
"It's final year P'. It's more project work and lesser classes. If it wasn't for us, Lin would just lie in bed all day" Tim chuckled.
"Lin scares all the first years so it's better she's not around," Wat said with a mouthful of ramen.
"Join us P's" Lin invited
"Actually we came looking for you and Ming mentioned this is your usual hang out so we thought we'd give it a try" Beam said grabbing chairs to sit at the same table
"Us?" Lin asked curiously "We're not in trouble, are we?"
Beam held out an invitation. "Our wedding" Beam said with a small smile.
Lin was the first to scream. Tim tried to shush her while Wat congratulated the couple.
"Preeth would you like us to come home to invite your parents?" Pha asked.
"I can give it to them" Lin answered. Lin had become a regular at Preeth's house ever since they moved closer to college over a year ago.
"But what a waste" Lin sighed looking at Forth and Beam
"What was that for?" Forth asked her. He was used to her blatant comments that came out of nowhere
"All your genes are going to waste... P'Beam's brains, your beautiful tanned skin... "
"Hey watch it before Forth gets jealous and punches you." Kit said
"Actually we're considering surrogacy Lin so nothing's going to waste" Beam winked at her.
"Really? That's awesome P'!" Tim said.
"Yeah, we weren't going to share it with anyone yet. Pha's looking into the procedures for us. We want kids. If we can't find the right person for us, we'll adopt" Forth said
"Yeah but only a year later" Pha interjected. "Beam has to finish his specialization and gain some experience"
"We're in no hurry" Forth said as he held Beam's hand under the table. Beam looked into Forth's eyes. For now, they enjoyed being just with each other. Every gesture of this couple emanated an aura of perfect bliss. The way Beam smiled at Forth, the way Forth instinctively pecked his forehead, the small curve of Beam's smile in response along with a short squeeze of Forth's hand, it was so enviable.
The rest of the meal went into the discussion of the wedding location and travel arrangements. The only one silent at the table was Preeth. Pha noticed she was lost in thought. Did she feel lonely he wondered. Everyone at the table had someone to call their own. Even Wat had a girlfriend.
Lin's POV
Preeth was silent off-late. Correction, Preeth was more silent than usual. She even seemed to be avoiding me. She took Forth's and Beam's invitation from me and said that she would give it to her parents herself. Normally I would have found any excuse to drop in and bother her parents and this was as good an excuse as any. The fact that she took it away meant she was certainly keeping her distance from me.
She was also coming to school later than usual. Today I saw her get off a different bus.
"Preeth, how come you got off a different bus?"
