chapter fourteen
enoughIt's the next day after the explosion. We've barely spoken since yesterday, no one knows what to say. I help wrap Daesu's wound on his leg, as Suhyeok walks over to us.
"Onjo wants to go back to look for Cheongsan, stay here. I'll be right back." I nod at him, knowing there isn't any danger out there anymore. I allow him to go with Onjo, Namra trails behind them.
After a few minutes of waiting, the three return and we start our journey up the mountain. "Hari." Wujin says, pointing to a tree branch.
She walks to where he directed to, we approach the small arm of the tree, a golden ribbon wrapped around it. Hari touches the ribbon with her fingers before saying "It was tied here."
"I see another one." I speak up, pointing a few yards in front of us. Another gold ribbon wrapped around the body of another tree. We start to follow the ribbon trail finally making it into the city.
We walk the empty streets in silence, not entirely sure all the zombies are gone. Smoke makes the air foggy, we can barely see what's in front us. Suhyeok grabs my hand firmly as we walk down the street slowly.
"I'm getting a bad feeling about this." Mijin says. "It's not just you." I reply, looking at each building we walk past.
"We're okay here." Hari says confidently. "What makes you say that?" Mijin says confused. "There isn't any blood on the streets and the windows aren't broken." She points out, nodding her head over to the shops on each side of us.
We continue to walk but Namra stops abruptly. "What is it?" Hyoryeong asks. "Hold on." Namra says quietly. We stop in our tracks waiting for Namra to respond. Namra sniffs the air and whips her head around quickly.
"What? Is someone here?" Suhyeok asks from next to me. "Zombies." Namra warns. "Everywhere." She continues.
I grab my bat from Onjo's bag, gripping onto it tightly. Namra breaths heavily and she tells us to run. We run into an alley, making many sharp turns trying to get away from the zombies approaching us.
Daesu and Wujin fall as Wujin was helping Daesu walk as his injuries gave him a limp. The crash makes us turn back and run towards them with concern. Suhyeok grabs a shovel from a nearby basket, ready to fight the zombies that come our way.
"Take Daesu and go." Suhyeok says heroically. I can't stand him sometimes. "Forget it." Daesu says, He stops limping to grab a nearby shovel to fight with. "I said go." Suhyeok responds.
"And I said forget it." Daesu replies harshly. I put myself into a fight stance next to Namra. Hearing the zombies trickle into the streets.
"I have a feeling it'll all end here." Mijin speaks up as she grabs into a broken broom stick. "Then let's go out with a bang. We've come a long way, let's make it count." I say nonchalantly, not actually taking Mijin's words seriously.
"Stay behind me." Suhyeok says firmly, standing in front of Namra and I. "Stop messing around. I told you, no more heroics." I told Suhyeok, pulling him behind me.
We stand silently, waiting for the zombies to come to us. The smoke not letting us anticipate which direction they're coming from. The sounds of zombies start to fill my ears as they run out from the corners of the streets, running towards us quickly.
I run towards the zombies, meeting them in the middle as I swing my bat towards them with all my might. More zombies run towards us and I start to fight them off. If you were able to kill one zombie, two more would fill it's place.
A zombie comes at me from the side, pushing me onto the ground. It's face inches away from my neck before Suhyeok jams in the side with his shovel. He grabs my hand and helps me onto my feet.
